Reputation, tradition continuing at Chowan
MURFREESBORO — As
Chowan begins its first year of
service since returning to four-
year status, the college continues
to earn the respect and reputation
academically as an outstanding
liberal arts college.
Founded in 1848, Chowan is
the second oldest of North Car
olina's seven Baptist colleges.
The campus landmark is the
historic McDowell Columns,
constructed in 1851, but most of
the facilities are of modem de
sign. Sixteen contemporary
buildings provide housing and
classrooms for about 1,000 stu
dents.
The campus sports and rcCTe-
ation center is the Helms Physical
Education Center, which houses
basketball and racquetball courts,
two gymnasiums, an Olympic-
sized swimming pool, aijd seating
for 3,000 spectators.

Getting ready for classes
The Trading Post Bookstore is one of the busiest places
on the College campus during the first few weeks
following the opening of school when students shop
for the required textbooks and other school supplies.
The Trading Post offers a full line of items needed for
college life and is also the college "bank" where
students may cash personal checks.
