Fecho teaches art,

It is standard operating procedure at
Rawls Museum of Art in Courtland,
Va., to win the Best of Show award
one year and get a one-person show the
next.
It was Susan Barbe Fecho’s turn and
her works were on exhibit in the
Rawls Gallery of the Walter C. Rawls
Library and Museum at the end of the
spring semester.
Featured were 42 pen-and-ink draw
ings, plus the three p’s — paintings,
prints and photographs.
Some of the drawings also can be
seen in The Outer Banks: An Artist's
Sketchbook, which she produced Iasi
year.
"The pictures can be colored in,”
Fecho said. “They are aimed at middle
schools and up, not really directed to
lower-grade students.”
Her attention is usually directed to
college students.
Fecho is associate professor art and
the head of the Division of Visual Arts
at Chowan, where she has been teach
ing for seven years.
She has bachelor’s and master’s de
grees from East Carolina University
and has completed additional study at
the Goldsmith Division of the
University of London and the Jan Van
Eyck Academy in Maasuict, Holland.
The Rawls one-person show was one
of the many appearances Fecho and her
works of art have made.
She participates in many East Coast
art shows, and her efforts line the walls
of many galleries.
“I’m a printmaker by training,”
Fecho said. “So you’ll see mixed
media pieces.”
She aims at realism with places,
people and chairs.
“You’ll see some from a series on
chairs as symbols of people, ” Fecho
said. “Different people use different
types of chairs.
“A lot of my images deal with time
and memories,” she said. “You begin
to think about images that could
represent people in the past. Also, a
lot of my work is personal — places I
go, visit — folks 1 know.
“Normally, 1 do scenery, and I love
furniture,” Fecho said. “I do a lot of
buildings, especially what you see in
rural areas — part of our culture that’s
dying, almost gone, tom down.”
