10 1995 Chowan Opener Deer management hunt to be hosted by Chowan To utilize an available resource and promote the scientific management of the greatest North American game species, the whitetail deer, Odocileus virginianas, Chowan College will sponsor a man agement hunt Oct 27-28. Biology majors, and all stu dents enrolled in ecology classes at the college, will assist the North Carolina Wildlife Re sources Commission in the col lection of scientific data on the local deer herd. Gilbert Tripp, a professor of biology and an avid hunter and outdoorsman, will direct the students in their research. David Rowe, the northeastern North Carolina district wildlife biologist, will dissect a deer in a classroom setting to allow ecol ogy and biology students the opportunity to gather pertinent data relative to the deer’s age, body fat content and reproduc tive rate. Proceeds will be used to supplement the department of science budget. The data collected by the Chowan students and wildlife biologists will be forwarded to the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission for consideration when determining hunting sea son dates and territorial bag lim its. The hunt will be held in the historically game rich section of northeastern North Carolina, commonly known as the Roanoke-Chowan area in tribute to the two large rivers which border the counties of Hertford, Gates, Bertie and Northampton. More than 50 local landown ers and supporters of Chowan College have agreed to provide at least 20,000 acres of private land for the weekend of con trolled hunting. Either the landowner or his representative will serve as the hunter’s host guide. The dates selected for the management hunt are in the prime pre-rut period to offer the best opportunity for calling (rattling and grunting). Hunters may choose bow and arrow, black powder or modem firearms and will have a choice of stand or still hunting. Hunt ing dogs will not be allowed. The $200 entry fee includes trespass fees, liability insurance and guide service, as well as a luncheon to begin the hunt and an awards banquet the following evening. Proceeds of the hunt will be used to supplement the budget of the college’s department of science.
