1995 Chowan Opener 7 Chowan athletic teams amass 212 wins The 11 intercollegiate athletic teams of the Chowan College Braves competed in 212 events against both NCAA Division II and in colleges during the 1994- 95 academic year and gained valuable knowledge and experi ence. "There were a large numbCT of positives learned during (he first year of competition against more experienced programs," said James G. Garrison, vice president for athletics, "with the women's softball and baseball teams leading the way with out standing records." 'There were a large number of positives learned during the first year of competition against more experienced programs with the women's softball and baseball teams leading the way with outstanding records.' James Garrison, Chowan vice president for athletics The Lady Braves shattered the single-season victory record with 35 wins. The men's base ball teams collected 28 victories in 34 games. Despite only two programs with winning records, the Braves were very competi tive with numerous victories over mwe experienced foes. As the 1995-96 year ap proaches, the Braves are opti mistic that the teams will con tinue to improve with returning lettermen in all programs which will be coupled with an added year of experience. The season will mark the first time in 27 years that a new head coach will lead the Chowan football program at Garrison Stadium. Garrison, the long-time head coach, announced earlier this year that the coaching reigns would be turned over to veteran defensive coordinator Dan Sur face. Surface consistently has coached his "defensive eleven" to rank among the nation's lead ers for 16 years and will contin ue to build upon the rich tradi tion that has been established.
