Chowan's teams seek conference Chowan College is a provi sional member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III and is seeking membership in the Dixie Conference and the East ern College Athletic Confer ence. In 1995-96, the college will sponsor these athletic teams: Baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, football, men's golf, soccer and tennis and women's soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Sports (From Page 7) New coaching faces will be seen in seven of the 11 pro grams. Two of the "young guns" who will be looking to instill their philosophies and energy into the men's and women's soccer programs are Jon Lindsay and Pam Kocker, who are be ginning their collegiate coach ing careers. The women's softball team set a single-season record for wins. Lindsay and Kocker will serve dual roles as they respectively take the reigns of the men's and women's tennis programs as well. The Lady Braves volleyball and basketball teams will be coached by Jeannette Alston, who recently served as an assis tant coach at South Carolina State University. Steve Flack, who served last season as pitching coach for the men's baseball team, takes over the very successful program. A graduate of Chowan College, Flack is a proven winner and will feature a fundamentally strong team which will continue to build upon previous suc cesses. Students get information, job counseling Chowan College rwognizes the importance of assisting stu dents in their career decision making. Career information, career counseling and interest invento ries are available in the Career Resource Center. The director of Career Devel opment is available for personal consultation. 1995 Chowan Opener 9 Grant enables Chowan to buy P.E. equipment Fitness machine Chowan College students use a new fitness machine, which was purchased with a grant from the Finley Foundation, in Helms Center. Chowan College has i«ceived a grant from the A.E. Finley Foundation of Raleigh, to pur chase an assortment of equip ment for the sports manage ment program and physical edu cation. “We are delighted to receive this significant conu-ibution,” said R. Clayton Lewis, director of corporate and foundation rela tions, “for it will provide some of the equipment needed for our four-year degree program in sports management.” The equipment, which in cludes a dynamometer and spirometer, will be housed in Helms Physical Education Cen ter and be used primarily by ju niors and seniors. The Finley Foundation, founded in 1957, places an em phasis on education in making grants to support health care, sports and athletics, the envi ronment and social services. A.E.
