Scott Releases Study
On Auto Insurance
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Gov.
Bob Scott released a study
commission report Monday that
recommends ftat North Caro
lina repeal its compulsory auto
insurance laws and allow each
insurance company to set its
own auto liability rates.
The report comes from the
Governor’s Commission on Au
tomobile Liability Insurance
and Rates, created by the 1969
General Ajssembly and headed
by Sen. Clyde Norton, D-
McDowell.
Scott specifically endorsed
several of the recommendations
and said he would transmit the
report to the legislature.
These are the major recom
mendations:
—Beginning Dec. 1, 1972, auto
liability rates be established on
a “file and use” basis. Present
ly all companies must charge
the rates fixed by the insurance
commissioner.
The commissioner could still
reject any company filing rates
he judged “excessive, in
adequate, discriminatory or de
structive of competition or the
public interest.”
—Medical pay insurance cov
erage be made readily avai
lable to assigned risk drivers in
limits of at least $500 and “at a
reasonable rate.”
