WINTER BEAUTY—Chowan’s campus
was a picturesque winter scene recently
when a seven-inch snow covered the
grounds. The scene above is of the lake
at the rear of the campus near Parker
Hall.
53 Students Complete Work
By LYNN DEANES
At the end of the first semester
ending December 15, 53 students
completed their academic
education at Chowan College.
Twenty-seven of those decided to
go directly into a working career,
securing a job. Twenty-six
transferred to other colleges
upon completing their graduation
requirements. Also, a small
number of those who left Chowan
entered the service.
Those who decided to go
elsewhere picked a variety of
places to continue their
education. Elon College has
attracted five students from
Chowan. Another five are going
to Mars Hill, three transferred to
Eastern Tuberculosis Association
Thanks Chowan for Campaign Help
Dean Clayton Lewis has received the following letter from
Mrs. Ruth H. Peterson, Executive Director of the Eastern Tuber
culosis and Respiratory Disease Association, which thanks
the Chowan College community for its assistance in the recent
Christmas Seal Campaign.
Dean Clayton Lewis
Chowan College
Murfreesboro, North Carolina 27855
Dear Dean Lewis,
I want to take this opportunity to say a personal "thank
you" to you and the students that worked in behalf of Eastern
Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association’s Christmas
Seal Campaign.
Through the efforts of you, Mr. Roland Pruette and Mr.
Robert Brown and all the student who worked with you, the band
concert and "car stop” netted a total of $80, which will help
us in our continued fight against respiratory diseases and air
pollution.
1973 promises to be a busy one. Even though we've come
a long way in our fight against these diseases, we still have a
long way to go before we combat them.
A Happy New Year to all of you and on behalf of the Asso
ciation, thank you again for your united efforts in our work.
Gratefully,
(Mrs.) Ruth H. Peterson
Executive Director
North Carolina State University.
Two are going up into the
mountains to Madison College
and another two are going to
Virginia Technical Institute.
Duke University has enrolled two
in their nursing program,
another one is going to the
University of North Carolina at
Greensboro, and two are being
educated at Atlantic Christian
College. Three others are going
into Virginia to go to the
University of Ridimond, two at
Old Dominion University.
Various other former
Chowanians are continuing their
education at community colleges.
If one was to total all the figures
Chowan lost about 100 students at
the end of the last semester.
Some of these are probably
planning to return at a later date,
and there are some who decided
to come back even though they
had previously withdrawn.

During the fall semester campus
life was sparked by an excellent
program of Intramural Ac
tivities. The competition
provided was helpful in breaking
the monotony that sometimes
formed on campus and provided
a good means of getting students
together.
The participation was excellent.
In a recent Smoke Signals in
terview with Dean James Earl
Dilday, Associate Dean of Men
and Director of Men’s In
tramurals, he estimated that
“approximately 70-76 per cent of
the male student body took an
active part in intramurals.”
He also commented on other
aspects of the program, com
plimenting students on their
conduct and spirit, adding that
“this fall there were fewer in
juries as opposed to last year and
only one protest.” Dean Dilday
felt that the Carolina Football
played in Physical Education
classes was a contributing factor
to the good organization the
students displayed on the field.
He spoke of the officiating as
“inexperienced,” but expressed
approval of the good job they did.
He said, “We try to work closely
with our officials, developing and
training them for possible future
officiating.”
The Buzzards of Parker Hall
Basement Floor captured first
(dace in the men’s fall intramural
point standings with a grand total
of 382 points.

Day 10
The spring semester will include
approximately 9 intramural
activities including, basketball,
weightlifting, swimming, tennis,
horseshoes, checkers, bad
minton, golf and softball.
Students have expressed interest
in a Fooseball tournament and
Dean Dilday has been looking
into the possibility but presently
no date has been set.
Basketball tips off first on the
spring calendar and all teams are
urged to participate.
In basketball North Carolina
High School rules will be followed
with the following modifications.
A game consists of two 18 minute
halves. The clodk is continuous,
stopping only for time-outs for
the first 15 minutes of each half—
the clock stops for all infractions
the last 3 minutes of each half.
Scrimmage jerseys of con
trasting colors with numbers on
each jersey will be furnished
each team. The team listed on the
right of the schedule is the visitor
team and will wear the red jer
seys. All players must wear tee
shirts or sweat shirts underneath
the game scrimmage jerseys.
Unit Managers must give line
ups to the field supervisor before
tipK)ff. This should be done before
the previous game is completed.
Each team is allowed four
minutes or by mutual agreement,
less, warm-up time. There will be
two minutes between halves.
Each team is allowed 3 time-outs
in the game, each time-out is one
minute in length, or shorter.
Games must be completed in one
hour from start to finish.
Any team or team members who
continually “argue” or “ride”
the officials” will be removed
from the game and-or result in
their team forfeiting the game.
Two technical fouls on any one
player will automatically
disqualify the player and the
disqualified player must leave
the gym.
The official score will be kept by
the scorer, not the timer. Each
team is required to furnish an
assistant scorer to aid the official
scorer in getting the names of
players who commit fouls, etc.
Referees will be instructed,
trained, and tested before they
officiate games. The officiating
will be as good as the playing.
Officials will be instructed to
watch all action, especially under
the basket for holding, elbowing,
pushing, etc. Keep it clean and
the officiating and playing will be
good and enjoyable.
