Sl^OKB STUDENT NEWSPAPER OF CHOWAN COLLEGE Volume 4 Number 8 Murfreesboro, North Carolina Wednesday, February 28, 1973 Queen of Spring Pageant Tomorrow Emphasis Set Mar. Religious Emphasis Week, scheduled for March 12-16, has promise of being a unique kind of experience in 1973 for both faculty-staff members and students of Chowan College. Departing from the traditional pattern of bringing a guest to campus for the purpose of “leading” the campus com munity in the exploration of some religious theme or idea, this year’s Religious Emphasis Week will depend almost entirely upon faculty, staff, and students to “do their own thing,” religiously, within the context of the normal daily routines of campus life. “Except for a possible film festival,” reports Chaplain R. Hargus Taylor, “the faculty- staff-students will do whatever is to be done in the way of an ob servance of Religious Emphasis Week.” To aid in this kind of undertaking, the theme “A Faith to Share” has been chosen for the week. A committee of some 15 students, chaired by Stanley Brown, Rocky Mount, North Carolina, is at work on the two chapel services for the week. Each member of the faculty-staff has been asked to dwell upon the theme of religious concern, commitment, or quest— whenever possible— within the context of his particular classroom work-assignments. “In other words,” continues Chaplain Taylor, “the college community is being invited to recognize the fact that one’s Week 12-16 religious f aith-concern- commitment permeates the whole fabric of a person's life— whether that faith-concern- commitment be good, bad, or indifferent. We cannot escape our being as religious beings. We can call the quality of that being into question through self- examination, reflection upon the experience of others, etc.” AU of this means that the “schedule of events” for Religious Emphasis Week will be our regular schedules. The content of those schedules will depend upon the extent to which each member of the college community — faculty, staff, students — becomes involved through reflection, self- examination, and personal ex pression of “A Faith To Share.” ART DEPT. OFFERS EUROPEAN TOUR Professors Craig Greene and Doug Eubank have announced that the art department is of fering a European tour this summer beginning July 16 and running through August 15. The tour receives three hours credit from both the history and art departments. Some of the sites on the itinerary include Rome, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Venice, Florence, and Inssbruck. The full cost of the trip, including meals, is $1210. For further details contact either Mr. Green or Mr. Eubank in Daniel Hall. The WRA (Women’s Recreational Association) of Chowan is sponsoring their “Queen of Spring Pageant” which will be held March 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Columns. This Pageant will introduce the Spring Festival Court Candidates to the student body and allow competition between the candidates. The freshman candidates will be competing for attendants and Freshman Princess on the court. The sophomore candidates will be competing for attendants and Queen — the top five being chosen. The Queen and court will be chosen on the basis of five attributes: Beauty, Poise, Talent, Personality and Dor mitory Support. The Queen of Spring, her Freshman Princess and court will reign over the Chowan College Spring Festival in April. The competition categories are scored by a rating of one to ten in each category. This is where the dormitory support becomes important; so get out and support your candidate by being present at the Pageant — it could add ten extra points to her score. The judges in the Pageant include: 4 residents of Mur freesboro (Mayor and Presidents of local civic clubs), 2 students of Chowan (Presidents of Men’s and Women’s Council), and 2 faculty members.
