) I Smoke Signals, Friday, Decembers, 1980—Page 5 ♦ ♦ ♦ f During their foil term, Chowan photography majors perform a series of news photography shooting assignments. These assignments are each designed in order for the photographer to have experience with technical problems and confrontation with shooting situations that sharpen visual judgement and perception. The photographs shown here, by four sophomore photo majors, are responses to some of these news photography assignments. Peggy Brorein's picture of Ahoskie tobacco warehouse workers is a candid portrayal of a relaxed working environment, with a contemporary photographic emphasis on work atmosphere. Wayne Davis attended the N.C. state fair, and returned with an early evening shot of life on the midway as it warms up for the night's fun. Sometimes pictures can be found in the humble, often neglected surroundings molded by people's lives. Katie Weir found such a study in black and white tone in the worn paint and weathered lattice work of a local bock door. Troy Snow also went to the state fair, and found a photograph to communicate how people may be drawn together by an event, and yet how they simultaneously may be worlds apart. Katie Weir also turned to the problem of illustrating some aspect of human interaction, and found a picture of complete candor, honesty and good humor in the photograph of two painters on their lunch break.
