I Pog«6 — Smoke Signal*, Friday, February 5, 1982 _ Most New Students Believe Chowan Is Right Place By JENNIFER WICKER More than 80 percent of the new students responding to a college survey last fall believe Chowan is the place where they should be. Of the 661 freshman and transfer stu dents who enrolled at Chowan for the first time in August, 1981,470 responded to a New Student Survey which showed how they view services available in the college and indicated the major areas of concern. The survey is designed to point up areas which need more attention to be focused on plans for new students. Dean R. Clayton Lewis said. “Many students had not been away from home before, and they had begun to adapt and adjust by mid-September, when we gave this survey,” according to Lewis, dean of students. Lewis added, “I’ve shared the results of the survey with members of the faculty and staff, with the idea that if they see the results, they can help us overcome the weaknesses in the system.” “We’re rather pleased with the results, and I’m delighted with the amount of participation, 71 per cent of the new students participation,” Lewis commented. Sylvia Nicks, director of Counseling and Career Development also was pleased, “The students had a positive response to the resident directors and resident assistants. ” Ms. Nicks suggested, however, that the survey should be given twice to the same group, so changes in opinion, could be registered. Lewis added with interest, “If we study these results, we could definitely help freshman make the transition from home to school; that’s what it’s all about.” Breakdown of responses follows: STATEMENTS Yes % No % No Response % 1.
