Caren AAuschel: American Ghost Novelist (1940-2020) Little has been known until now about the missing middle years (1982-1987) of Caren Muschel's life. My Harried Times, private recollections just published, indicates that Muschel, Utile-known American ghost novelist, was in graduate school in the 1980’s and from time to time hid out in a local psychiatrist’s office, mumbling about a group term paper in SEED 6424. Muschel, a native of eastern North Carolina, “produced during her eighty years five novels, some of which were trash but all of which were on the bestseller list.” Muschel led a rather conventional life. In high school she was voted most talented by her classmates. After college graduation in 1961, she began teaching English and history among friends at her high school alma mater. During that time, the lives of Muschel and her husband Mitch were an open textbook. Ac cording to Ron Barker, a former stu dent, “Yeah, she came to school every day.” Like most English teachers, she began to write. She started with memos, moved quickly to business let ters, and finally ventured into letters to the editor of a local newspaper. The editor was one of her friends. Before she knew it, she was writing profes sionally. Her first novel Bye, Bye, McSbane (1971) was about the love she and her husband shared with their wonderful young son Mitch. In 1975 she published her second novel, this one named for and inspired by her lovely daughter Avril. According to Dottie Powers, her close friend, “Life was simple for C^en then.” In 1982 her new employer at a local technical college suggested strongly that she attend graduate school. At that point her life story strangely faded away. Little has been known until now about Muschel’s life in the 1980’s. Dur ing that time when her children were questioned about their mother, Mitch replied, “She must be around here somewhere, or maybe she’s in Greensville.” In My Harried Times, which consists chiefly of frantic memos, notes and let ters, Muschel describes her life in 1983: My typical day includes one cup of coffee; classes in English grammar, report writing, and oral communica tions; clashes with my fourteen-year- old son; and hours in a car on a desolate road in eastern North Carolina. Occa sionally I can sneak time for a kiss from my husband, a glance at the newspaper, a chat with my daughter, and a jc4ce with a friend. From time to time Muschel expresses her exasperations in rhyme, in “Twas the Eighteenth of April” Muschel ex plains to Dr. James Wrong about miss ing his ECU class: Twas the eighteenth of April, When all through the town. The people were happy. There was not a frown. The flowers were bloomin’ By the houses with care. In hopes that springtime Soon would be there. The commuters were nestled. All snug in their car. While visions of ECU Could not be far. And Liz in her raincoat, And I in my cap. Had just settled back For a drive - just a snap. When what to my wondering Eyes should appear 6ut 6NUW on my windshield. My trunk, and my gear. This little old driver, So lively and quick, Just knew in a moment * There must be some trick. More rapid than eagles The snowflakes they came. They flittered and fluttered And soared to their fame. Now, Freida, Now Rendy, Now Cheryl and Pat, Should we drive on. What do you think of that. (When they meet with and obstacle, They usually go. But Somehow they’re really Afraid of the SNOW.) So the car turns around And heads back for home. Right then they decide That no more will they roam. Muschel concludes her pKtem with Uiis thought: “I hope Dr. Wrong-Wili miss us tonight.” Critics and family members have consistently praised her last three novels: Pepsi Cat’s Eyes (1990), Where Did My Youth Go. (1995), and b Anybody Ont There Studying. (2002). According to Bobby Gasser of Newsmonth, “Her style is refreshing. Yes, that’s it. It’s refreshing.” The literary world can rest easily now that the missing years fo Muschel’s life have surfaced. However, according to her editor and friend Patsy Pigeon, one mystery remains. What is SEED 6424. (EkI Note...Carolyn Mitchell is an Instructor at Roanoke-Chowan Tec- nical College. For those who have traveled to E^ast Carolina or other schools for graduate work, then her submission to SMOKE SIGNALS needs little explanation.)
