Whitaker, left, and music professor Bob Brown after the Perquimans band placed first in the Fall Festival of Marching Bands held as part of Chowan's homecoming activities, Perquimans won from a field of 12 bands and received a $500 cash award by Belk-Tyler Stores of eastern North Carolina. Chowan Stadium was filled for the annual event sponsored by Chowan's Fine Arts Department and coordinated by Brown. Winners in Division A for bands of 60 or less members were Northern Nash, first; Manteo, second: and Northampton East, third. In Division AA for larger bands, Perquimans placed first, John A. Holmes of Edenton was second, and Apex was third. Following the band festival, Northern Nash and Perquimans presented the pre-game and halftime shows repectively as Chowan defeated Ferrum, 27-7, in a Coastal Conference football game. m A Punt return specialist and defensive bock Jeff Gethers cradles this Ferrum punt following a fair catch. As of October 27th, Gethers had returned twenty-two punts for a total of 146 yards. The Cross. South Carolina native averages over six and a half yards per return. Chowan's placement specialist Bill West puts the pigskin on its way toward the uprights out of the hold of Anthony Baynard. West's point after kicks and field goals gave him a total of thirty-two points on the year as of October 27th. That fact made him the top point producer of kickers in the conference.
