Smoke Signals, August 29, 1986- Page 3 Counseling and Career Development Center Scene from 1985 tall production of Ketti Frings’ Pulitzer Prize winning dramatization of Thomas Wolfe’s novel, Look Homeward, Angel. Fall Play Auditions The drama division's fall production will be Harper Lee’s famous story, To Kill A Mockingbird. This account of a black man wrongfully accused of s.ssaulting a white woman takes place in Maycomb, Alabama in 1935. It is a beautiful story of children growing up in the south and not understanding racial prejudice. The successful movie version featured Gary Grant as the country lawyer, Atticus Finch. This production is a serious undertaking by the Chowan Players. It is our hope that many of you will consider the opportunity for working backstage or onstage in this production. Many responsible positions need to be filled on the crews. A stage manager, assistant to the director, lighting crew (a crew chief is needed with experience or knowledge of electrical wiring), properties crew and costumer will be needed, just to name a few. You may invest as much time (or as little) as you feel you can spare from your studies. These positions vary in duties and in time required. If you think you might be interested in working backstage or in a business capacity (publicity, ticket sales, programs) please visit me in 115 Daniel Hall on a Monday or between 11-12:30 on a Tuesday or Thursday. We can discuss what you think you would like to do and how much time you want to commit. If you are interested in auditioning for this play, you have a treat in store. Three of the primary roles are for a girl and two boys between the ages of 11 and 14. If you are small or slight of frame. this is your big chance. The country lawyer, Atticus, is fortyish. Many other roles of all ages are available. Five roles must be filled by blacks. The Finch’s housekeeper, Calpurnia, is a primary roll. Tom Robinson, the accused man, and his wife, Helen, are good roles. The Rev. Sykes is another strong male role for a black. If you are interested in auditioning for a role, you may pick up a reading copy of the script in my office during the hours listed above. Auditions are scheduled for September 22 and the performance is scheduled for November 12-15. If you are interested in working on this play, I am interested in meeting you. Drop by soon. The facilities for Chowan’s Counseling and Career Development Center are conveniently located on the lower level of historic McDowell Columns and include the counseling office, career center, and transfer library. Counseling is available to all students of the college on a personal basis in matters related to academic, social, career, and transfer to senior institutions. The Center’s transfer library houses a wide variety of materials including handbooks and guides to four-year colleges and universities. Among these are: The College Handbook, Peterson’s Guide to Four-Year Colleges, Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges, Lovejoy’s College Guide, and many others which are helpful to students making decisions for continuing their education after graduation from Chowan College. Also included in the transfer library are current catalogs from all four-year institutions in North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia. Publications of many other colleges from throughout the nation are maintained, and microfiche copies of catalogs from more than 1,500 other institutions in the eastern and southern regions are available along with application forms and other pertinent information. As a further service to students, access to the college’s WATS telephone system allows direct contact with four- year institutions to obtain specific information and/or answers to student inquiries concerning transfer. The Chowan Counseling Center maintains close contact with admissions officers of other institutions, especially those in North Carolina and Virginia. Career Center Many opportunities are available for students to gain directions and advice in their choice of employment careers. Students may take the SDS (“Self- Directed Search: A Guide to Education and Vocational Planning”) or the “Harrington/O’Shea System for Career Decision-Making” at the Chowan Career Center. After completing these tests, and appropriate evaluation and interpretation, students may study the description of the many careers which are included in “John Holland’s System of Career C3assification” (RIASEC). To provide additional information and advice, the Center maintains several files with career information and descriptions. Chronicle Guidance Publications of “Occupational Briefs” provide detailed information on more than 500 occupations, and these materials are updated monthly. Also available are Vocational Biographies, each with an excellent index. The Career Center makes available to students a vast selection of books, magazines, current articles, etc., to aid in decisions to prepare for a career occupation. Included are: The Dictionary of Occupational Titles, The Occupational Outlook Handbook, The Occupational Outlook Quarterly, Business Careers, and many, many others. Personal Counseling Well-qualified counselors are available to meet the student’s needs for personal counseling on any type of concern or problem, such as academic, social, or spiritual. In occasional situations when the student’s need would be best served by other agencies, referrals are made to the Roanoke- Chowan Human Services Center in nearby Union, or the Wiccacon Substance Abuse Center in Harrellsville. Students referred to these agencies will be provided transportation if they so desire. The Counseling and Career Development Center provides group counseling through a variety of programs on campus, such as the Alcohol Referral Program. The ARP is an educational program designed to provide accurate, up-to-date information regarding the use and abuse of alcohol. The Counseling Center also conducts several seminars of interest to students such as one concerning teenage suicide. In group counceling sessions, audio-visuals are presented and the students have an opportunity to participate through discussions and group activities. A popular seminar, “Career Profiles,” highlights a different career in each session with presentations from speakers in their respective professional fields. Employment Assistance Current information is maintained and posted on the Career Center’s bulletin boards to assist students in obtaining employment. Emphasis is placed on information concerning summer employment opportunities for students at two-year institutions. Publications are available on job hunting including: What Color Is Your Parachute?, Why Should I Hire You?, The Job Hunt, and many other books. Further assistance to students seeking employment are articles and booklets on resume writing such as Does Your Resume Wear Blue Jeans?, and guidance is offered for the student’s preparation for the all-important job interview. Current information is always available in the Career Center on the present job market as well as the outlook and prospects for that of the future.
