It was a cold and windy evening in late October 1886. Chowan Col
lege was only 38 years old and was not yet a coed institution. One of
the students then, Eolene Davidson, died mysteriously that night.
Over the years the truth about her death would be lost in time.
The young girl who died 100 years ago that cold October night, is
the origin of Chowan’s legendary ghost, the “Brown Lady”. There
are many accounts of her death. Was it suicide, or did she die from
a broken heart when her beloved fiance did not return to her?
The Brown Lady’s ghost continues to haunt today’s Chowan
students: from a late night rap on a window to the eerie sound of
her dress rustling as she takes her midnight stroll down the girl’s
dormitory hallways.
Perhaps our resident ghost will remain walking the hallowed
halls of Chowan, remembering that cold and windy Halloween in
1886 when she mysteriously died. Perhaps she will even visit us
again this October 31st, the 100th anniversary of her death.
