Fipps Mike Griffin Joey Markham Richard Perry Robert Prince Thomas Royal Reggie Sasser Robbie Steed Advisor Miss Tracy Hartert It’s that time again By Olga DaCosta Now that Easter Break is behind us, we all have the summer ahead of us with jobs to do and places to go. But surely college can not be all vacation, “we have to sit through the rain before we can see the rainbow” and that means exam time. For the sophomores, this marks graduation and for freshmen a new year. However, before this goodness can take place, the ejcams must be passed and that requires studying. Hopefully the sophomores can give their best shot and come to a domain of success that would bring opening opportunities whether for work or further education. As the semester nears the end, everyone will be filled with excitement and ner vousness as they get ready for exams. Some people will vacation in exotic places as others find employment in their hometowns. Whatever you are going to do this summer, let’s hope that everyone will be satisfied with their performance. Dean Lowe addresses students To the Students of Chowan College: This has been a good year for Chowan College, and you, our students, are largely responsible for this. All of our programs and services are planned and upgraded con stantly for your benefit. We want you to have the opportunity for the best possible educational experience. There are many things that we want for you as students and graduates of Chowan College. We want you to be able to com municate effectively, both orally and in writing. Without this most basic of skills, your future development will be severely hampered. We want you to be knowledgeable of the natural world in which we live and of which you are a part. We want you to understand the cultural heritage of the western world, but also to appreciate the culture of others. We want you to learn to in quire accurately, to be able to think in dependently and creatively. We also want you to grow morally, to develop a mature philosophy of life, to be able to make value judgements. We want you to be able to think critically. We hope that, to some degree, each of you has accomplished these objectives, but also that you will continue to develop in these vital areas. To every student, we express very best wishes for the successful comple tion of this academic year. To our graduates, we wish success in your senior college or in your chosen profession. We also express appreciation for your two years with us and for the contribution that you have made to the college. We will, of course, look forward to the return of other students this fall, and we urge these to persevere in their plans to earn the associate degree. Sincerely yours, B. Franklin Lowe, Jr. Dean of the College Dean Lewis sends graduates off Dear Candidates for graduation: Congratulations! Completing re quirements for the associate degree in dicates you are inclined to persist. You have the ability to persevere. That is a strength. Through the years, I have noticed people with perseverence tend to be stabilizers. They are the people who can and will con tinue in a program until it is completed. Such individuals are regarded as assets to institutions, businesses, and communities. Employers know the value of being associated with people who do not quit, who are not easily distracted or discouraged. Also, I want to use this occasion to express appreciation for the opportunities to be associated with you during your Chowan College experience. I hope you have realized growth and development. We in Student Development have tried to develop and maintain an environment which encourages and reinforces the learning process. The freshman and sophomore years are very important. I am glad you made yourself available to the many benefits enjoyed by those who elect to study with us. Freshmen and sophomores are in the process not only of gaining an education, but more important in many respects, are also discovering themselves, identifying personal aspiration, and maturing as human beings. From what I have heard hundreds of Chowan alumni say during my twenty-year association with the college, I have come to believe many students must leave Chowan before they really love it. Students do not gain experiences which can be compared to what was too frequently taken for granted at Chowan until after transferring. Chowan College is people centered, but some people have to transfer before they know how to ap preciate what was regarded as peripheral and expendable at dear old Chowan. But, that is hindsight! I urge you to become actively involved in the Chowan College Alumni Association. Keep us informed of your achievements through The Chowanian. Visit us as often as your schedule permits. Staying in touch with former Chowanians is one of the fringe benefits of my work. I hope your apprecia tion for Chowan will motivate you to con tribute financially to the continued develop ment of the college, a private institution. Chowan exists because faculty, staff, trustees, advisors, alumni and friends believe in the purpose of the college and demonstrate their appreciation for such an institution with contributions. Buildings and programs at Chowan are financed with gifts from the many people who want young men and women to enjoy the benefits of an educational experience in a small, people centered, liberal arts college. As a conclusion, I want to share one of my favorite quotes from Confucius, “By nature men are pretty much alike; it is learning and practice that set them apart.” Sincerely, Clayton Lewis Dean of Students CASH For Books Sell them At Chowan College Bookstore May 9-12 9:00am—12:00pm 1:00pm—4:00pm ALL LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE APRIL 27!
