Greg's background leans toward a hardrock style, Tim prefers to play glamrock, Robert prefers to play techno rock, and Mike prefers to play Jazz or contem New Students Adjust To College Life porary Christian. Mike stated, “Our various musical backgrounds help to form the unique style of Twenty 20.” He also commented that their “dif ferent musical backgrounds cause tension, but that is to be expected Twenty 20 plays hits from popular bands such as, Brian Adams, The Bangles, White Lion and The Cure. They also have many originals to add to their playing list. Some of the songs the band members have writ ten are “Blinded,” “Call to your Heart,” “Only You,” “In the Night,” and “Ideal Situation.” The band prefers to play their originals because they feel that they are down to earth and that the songs are about things that have happened in life. Twenty 20 has only played once in front of a crowd and that was at the night club, Bongers. The band said they feel comfortable in front of peo ple.Greg stated, “You get a natural high hearing the crowd, there’s nothing like it.” The band hopes to appear before a Chowan crowd many times. The band practices in the Lakeside Student Center every other night for four hours or more. Now that the band has been playing together a while, they are beginning to think and play together. Through the long hours of practice the band enjoys the"paying "and 'fhe ' ex- perience they are gaining. “Dude man. It’s . . . It’s fun dude, I like it,” Tim quoted. In the future, Mike plans to become a contemporary Christian studio musician in Nashville, Ten nessee. Tim plans to pursue a career in commercial art and to continue his music as far as it will take him. Greg plans on becoming a recording engineer. In the future, if you get a chance to go see Twenty 20 play, I strongly advise you to go. The band should be playing at Chowan for Spring Festival. By Zachary Wilson New students find life at Chowan quite different from others. Ex perienced students are accustomed to the college life. The first words coming from many of them is that it is boring. There’s not much to do around here. The other half said that it is nice and quiet on campus. The peacefulness enables them to do their work and concentrate. The at mosphere around campus is so kind. There’s never a day without hearing the words hello and how are you do ing. Everybody is easy to get along with. One student said that Chowan is the place for her, because a four year college will be a big step for her. Here at Chowan the professors know you as a person, not a number. Then came along the dislikes. The first impression of the rooms was shattering. The rooms were too small at first, but now since they have ad justed, the rooms are alright. Another of their dislikes was the cafeteria hours. Breakfast hours are too short. Students that have nine o’clock classes either miss breakfast or get up too early to eat, and have to wait for their nine o’clock class to start. Dinner hours should be ex tended. Instead of closing at six, the cafeteria should be opening at six. It will be like eating at home. Another concern was the visitation days shouldn’t be limited. The students feel that visitation days should be everyday. The last dislike was the location of the college. The location lacks entertainment. There’s not enough action going on in the area. Here are a couple of suggestions for those that have a lot of leisure time. The gym is open until ten o’clock every night. Make use of the racketball and basketball courts. Gather up all your friends and go to the swimming pool, and it too, will become a place to have fun. The stu dent center also is a good place for entertainment such as ping pong, table pool, various board games, cards video games and television. Besides the likes and dislikes the ultimate goal that they are reaching for is an Associate Degree from Chowan .... Making The Grades By Frank Amath For many of us, college is the first time in our lives that we are away from home. To most of us this means no parental pressures, such as doing our work and coming in early. Like most. I’m sure you feel that this is the time to spread your wings and do what you want. So, let’s talk about what we want to do. Most of us want to have a good time and enjoy our college years, but don’t forget about what is impor tant, your GRADES! You need to keep up with your grades if you want to stay at college. Security Protects Students By Frank Arnath Most of you know Jack Britt is the security officer on campus. Mr. Britt is only one of five security officers, but we rarely see them jor some reason or another. Maybe we just don’t take time to look for them, either. So I think an introduction is appropriate. They are as follows: William Newsome, Cheryl Outlaw, Gloria Holloman, and Patrick Eure. A lot of you have one opinion and one opinion only of the security here on campus. You all basically think that they are here to make our lives as miserable as possible. This is a very big misconception on our part. So let’s take time to look at what they really do for us. Security provides an important service for all of us, and that service is protection. They make sure un wanted visitors stay off campus, they watch the buildings, our cars, and our personal property in general. For you ladies out there, they provide an important service that is almost necessary today. They make sure you are not molested or harmed in any way. This is probably the most im portant of all of them. Now, they not only protect us, but they are our friends also. They know what it’s like for us, and they overlook certain stupid things we do sometimes due to their understan ding. So try not to put them down or ridicule them. They are only doing their jobs, and furthermore they are only human. They need friends just like everybody else. So drop by and get to know them better. It certainly would help relations between them and us. The best way to do this is to take your work seriously. Take good clear concise notes in class so that when it comes time to study out of class you will know what you’re going over. You should get your work done early enough so you are able to go out and do what you want. If you do this then you won’t worry about why you stayed out so late and couldn’t get your work done. Another thing you need to do, and probably the most important one of all is not to wait un til the last minute to study for a test. This is where a lot of students mess up really bad, because you only re tain half of what you need to know.- This means you only receive half of the grade you could have gotten. If you take time to do these things you will make it all the way through college without any sort of problems. Also by doing this you’re showing others that you can take care of yourself. Most importantly of all you will be showing yourself that you no longer need your parents to push you. Just because you take time to do your work first does not mean you will not have fun. In fact you’ll be able to enjoy yourself a lot more. Brave On Warpath Chowan Cheerleader Chris Robbins shows the true spirit of one of Chowan’s leaders, both in the dorm and in academic life. By: Robert Prince Fire safety is an important part of the Chowan campus community. Each student needs to be aware of issues, such as fire hazards, fire safe ty features and fire plans. Some of the fire hazards that need to be considered are such things as smoking material, flames (candles), decorations, trash, furniture and flammable liquids. Arson and false alarms are very serious fire hazards and should be avoided at all costs. Many of the dorms and buildings have fire safety features. You need to know where to find each of these features in case of a fire. Some fire safety features are fire extinguishers, fire alarms, fire escapes, smoke detectors, fire doors and an emergency number. A fire plan is one of the most im portant features in fire safety. The college has set up fire plans for the students to follow, but here are some other helpful suggestions. You should decide on at least two exits. Count and remember the number of doors between your door and the ex its. Be able to locate fire alarms and fire extinguishers in the dark. Make sure you follow directions from the person in charge. Make sure the fire department is notified and an alarm has been sounded. Stay calm and follow the exit procedures. When exiting, make sure you feel the door before you open it. If the door is hot or if smoke is seeping in, do not open the door. If it is cool, open the door a crack, but be ready to close it if you see flames or smoke. Leave the room if the hall seems safe. You should tie a wet cloth around your mouth, nose and head. Take your room key and make sure all doors are closed behind you. After exiting the building report to your meeting place and get counted. Remember never to use an elevator during a fire. If you are trapped in your room, keep the door closed. Seal cracks around the door with tape, clothing, sheets or anything that will do the job. If possible open the window slightly, if there is no smoke outside. Open the top to ventilate smoke and the bottom to bring in fresh air. Tie a wet cloth around your nose, mouth and head and stay close to the floor. Signal rescuers by waving a sheet or clothing out the window and do not jump if you are higher than the se cond floor. If your clothing should catch fire, do not run. Drop to the ground and roll. Use a rug, coat or blanket to smother the flames. To summarize these fire safety tips, be aware of fire hazards, know how to locate safety features in your building, and be careful with cigarettes, electrical appliances and combustibles.
