Volume 17 Number 4 itnabe Chowan College March, 1989 Likes and Dislikes of Resident Directors Gazebo-Chowan Campus new edition. Still under construction. Gazebo Built To Honor Chowan College Alumnus By Robert Prince In honor of Susan Parker Kerr, an alumnus of Chowan College there is a gazebo being built adjacent to the McDowell Columns building. Mrs. Kerr asked that a gazebo be built to provide students with a place where they could sit and spend time out side. It could also be used for special occasions, such as speakers and entertainment. The gazbeo will be 20 feet across, have 8 sections and seat about 40 people. It will be equipped with elec- tical outlets, lights on the inside, and at night will have 2 flood lights in front of it. The gazebo will enhance the area around the Columns building by providing more shrubs and greenery to the surrounding area of the gazebo. Around the perimeter^f the gazebo there will be a 5 foot sidewalk, the entrance to the garden will have an 8 foot sidewalk, and a 4 foot sidewalk will join the walk beside Columns. An eighteen inch high brick wall will also be built in front of the gazebo even with the Columns building. The gazebo will have cedar shakes (wooden shingles) and have 8 fluted columns that will match with the columns on the McDowell building. There will also be an irrigation system installed to keep shrubery alive. A 600 pound; brass bell will be hung in the middle of the gazebo. It will hopefully be used as a victory bell for sporting events. The bell has been hanging in the McDowell Col umns building and will soon be put in the gazebo. The gazebo will hopefully be finished by early spring if the weather permits. Chowan Players Present “Carnival Jennifer Grooters plays Lili, a young girl who wants to join the Carnival. Tornado Safety By Frank Arnath The time of year when you should worry about these powerful and devastating funnels is now! You should acquaint yourself with some very important warnings and safety tips. First: do you know what a tornado watch is? It is when weather condi tions are favorable for a tornado for mation. Second: do you know what a tornado warning is? It is when a fun nel has been spotted in your area. Now that you know some simple terms lets look at some safety tips. What should you do if you’re in a car? You should stop the vehicle, get out and find shelter in a nearby ditch or ravine. If you don’t you could get a birds eye view of the situation. What should you do if you’re in a house? You should go to either a basement or the inner most part of the house such as bathrooms or hallways. If you’re in a school, place of work, or so forth, go to places designated for such occasions. In high-rise buildings (such as Parker Hall) go to the inner small room and hallways, or in our case the bathrooms. If in a mobile home you need to leave right away and find suitable shelter! In long span buildings (such as the rest of the dorms on campus) go to inner bathrooms and lean against something sturdy. In all cases you need to stay clear from all glass windows and objects. When in a most desirable place get in a crouched position and put your hands over your head. In all emergencies you need to stay calm and don’t panic! Spring Break, at Last By: Robert Prince Spring Break is a time for the col lege students to get away from the mental and physical stress of college life. Many of the students spend their time working, partying and just relaxing at home with their family and relatives. Since Spring Break falls in the middle of the second semester; many of the students are out of money and many have to use their break to regain a financial status to make it through the rest of the semester. Some of the lucky students get the chance to spend their vacation in places such as Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Myrtle Beach, and other well-known vacation spots. If they’re lucky enough to get down south in Florida, they can enjoy the warm spring sun and the excitement of the many people that flock to the Florida beaches during spring break. Going to a beach is a tradi tion that grows every year. Many of the students will spend their vacation at home with their family and at homes of their relatives. Since the break falls on Easter, many of the students will travel to far off places to spend this wonderful celebration with their lov ed ones. Spring Break is just a perfect break for the students. It gives them the time to get away from school and get all the wild times out, it gives students time to spend with friends and catch up on old stories and gives students a chance to earn extra money. Well, the newspaper staff would like to wish all the students a safe and exciting spring break!
