PAGE 2 - SMOKE SIGNALS, APRIL 1989 CHOWAN SPORTS By Ken Traino Braves Basketball History Lady Braves Recap With a record of twenty-five wins and seven losses, Coach Bob Burke couldn’t have asked for more, except maybe to win the conference cham pionship. The Braves were beaten by the North Greenville Mounties at a home game for the championship. An outstanding year, with tremen dous wins, kept the Braves in tip-top shape. Out of the starting five, four were sophomores who won’t be returning next semester. Losing a total of six players. Coach Burke may have some trouble on his hands next season. We don’t think so. One player who will be returning is Ber nard Terrell. He will be playing an offensive position. Players Terry Massey and Billy Coles had been selected to some very prestigious games. Billy Coles is the third in six years to be invited to the U.S.A.-Texas Jr. College All-Star Game which was held on April 8th in Midland, Texas. Terry Massey was selected to the team for the First Conference All-Region Tournament. Our best wishes to these fine young men in their basketball careers. As the sophomores of Chowan College know the team’s 1987-88 season, I thought it would be nice to share with you all some of the highlights of that winning season so the freshmen would also appreciate the Braves efforts. Also, 1 thought it would be interesting to show the in dividual records of the 88-89 season and the records of years past. So here they are and I’ll see you all at the games! 1987-88 Season Highlights * NJCAA Sweet Sixteen * Region X Champions ' ' * Eastern Division Regular Season Champs * Central Florida Champs * N.B.C. Since then the team has had some ups and downs. As the Lady Braves mature into a tougher team, they begin to move their way back up the ladder. At the start of the season Coach Rene’ Osborne started four freshmen who had never seen each other or even played together for that matter. One sophomore had started, but as the story goes she, Kristy Hill, won’t be returning next season. Doris Kelley, Bobbi Fluellyn, Tammy Harvey, and Rebekah Reasor will be returning next season. Bobbi Fluellyn, Tammy Harvey, and Rebekah Reasor were all top re bounders scoring nine to ten re bounds per game. Bobbi Fluellyn had the highest percentage of free throws, 82%. A record of seven wins and sixteen losses wasn’t the highlight of the Lady Braves season. Perhaps the highlight was being third in the region in free throws (66%), or perhaps the team will have learned from their mistakes by watching them on videotape. In 1981, Louisburg won the na tional tournament. Maybe in the future Chowan could win that prestigious title. Most of the games were close but errors came into play. As the returning players begin train ing with new recruits the experienced players can tell the newcomers what to expect in a college ball game. As the extensive training pro cess starts next semester, the Lady Braves will have to remember that team work plays the most important role in any game. As the team did well this past season, next season promises to be better. See you at the games! Braves Trip Down Memory Lane A trip down memory lane with the Chowan College wrestling team. In the 1971-72 season the Braves 0-3 with no All-Americans, no placing in the Mid-Atlantic Conference, and no placing in the N.J.C.A.A.. A pretty bad season for Coach Charles Helms. In the 1988-89 season the Braves were 12 and 4 with two All- Americans, 3rd in the Mid-Atlantic Conference, and 11th in the N.J.C.A.A.. A pretty good season for Coach Jody Taylor. Within eighteen years the Braves have had nine different coaches. Their best season was in 1979-80, when they had two All-Americans, were 7th in N.J.C.A.A., were 1st in Southeast Regional and had a record of 12 wins and 0 losses all under the guidance of Steve Nelson. But Coach Nelson had the Braves worst season. Nelson’s first year as a Chowan coach was not successful, with a record of zero wins and thirteen losses the Braves weren’t ranked too well nationally that year. In the fall of 1987, Chowan Col lege got the talent of a bright new coach, Jody Taylor. As most would expect, a coach of two years shouldn’t do that well. Jody Taylor has proved them all wrong. With an 87-88 record of 13-2-1 having one All-American, being 4th in the Mid- Atlantic Conference, and a 34th place in the N.J.C.A.A. was pretty good. The 88-89 record was even bet ter. Twelve wins and four losses was just the start. Two All-Americans, 3rd place in the Mid-Atlantic Con ference, and 11th in the N.J.C.A.A., the Braves really kicked some butt! Once again Coach Taylor hopes to keep the winning tradition of Chowan College as the years and seasons come. Braves Wrestling By Dr. Tom Appenzeller The Chowan Braves Wrestling team fmished the 1988-89 season as the 11th best Junior College in the country. Head Coach Jody Taylor took 4 wrestlers to the NJCAA Na tional Tournament in Chicago, II- linios and returned to Murfreesboro with two All-Americans. Sophomore team Captain Daton Heggie (167) won 4 matches and lost 2 in the two-day tournament to finish 5th in the country. Heggie finished the season with a 33-8-1 record and a 57-20-1 record over two years. Heavyweight Freshman Melvin Crosby became the second highest finisher in Chowan history when he became a National runner-up in Chicago. On the way to the Finals, Crosby defeated Robby Benjamin (1987) National Champion, and John Hilkey who won the award for most falls in the tournament. In the Finals, Melvin wrestled Paul Weltha (6’6”, 274 lbs.) from Iowa Central Recap and was defeated on a last second takedown 5-4. Crosby finished his rookie season with a 29-7 record and All-American Honors. Joining Heggie and Crosby in Chicago were James Wall (150) and David Wilderman (134). Wall finish ed the regular season at 26-6-2,6-0-1 in conference action and he was 1 and 2 at Chicago. David Wilderman was 16-3, 9 and 2 in dual matches, but he went 0-2 at the Nationals. The Braves finished the regular season 12 and 4 and ranked 17th, but Chowan surprised all the experts with the 11th place finish, second highest in the school history. In two years in Murfreesboro, the Braves under Taylor have a combined record of 25-6-1 in dual matches. Chowan has had 4 Mid-Atlantic champions, 9 National qualifiers, a National runner-up, 2 academic All- Americans, 3 All-Americans and an 11th place national ranking.
