Page 4 —SMOKE SIGNALS, November, 1990 Changes in personnel bring new faces to Chowan Dr. Mary Ruth Coleman Dr. Mary Ruth Blackwell Coleman has joined the faculty of Chowan College as chairman of the Department of Developmental Studies, a new department established this year at Chowaa Dr. Coleman brings to Chowan a wide range of experi ence in the area of developmen tal studies, and has most recently completed a term as guest lec turer at the University of Vir ginia in Charlottesville. She holds the doctorate in philosophy, edu cation from the department of special education and literacy studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; the mas ter’s degree in education with emphasis in math and science from East Carolina University; and the bachelor of science de gree in education from East Caro lina University. Coleman has published nu merous articles on developmen tal studies and serves as associ ate editor of the Journal for the Education of the Gifted at UNC- Chapel Hill. She previously served as an instructor on the con tinuing education faculty at East Carolina University, and as di rector of Scholastic Edge, a pri vate educational consulting firm serving school systems and indi vidual students. She is married and resides in Washington, N.C. Dr. David Brian Gowler Dr. David Brian Gowler has joined the faculty in the Depart ment of Religion and Philosophy at Chowan College as assistant professor of religion. Dr. Gowler comes to Chowan from Berry College in Rome, Georgia, and previously taught at the Southern Baptist Theologi cal Seminary in Louisville, Ken tucky. He holds the B.A. in religious studies from the University of Dlinois, the Master’s of Divinity and the Ph.D. from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also completed university study at Cambridge University in Cambridge, England where he studied with the Reverend Dr. Christopher C. Rowland (Jesus College) and the Reverend John Dniry (King’s College). Dr. Gowler is married, and his wife, Rita Gowler, holds the B.S. degree in horticulture from the University of Illinois. Mary Jo Byrd Mary Jo Byrd joined the staff at Chowan College as Associate Dean of Student Development Dean Byrd comes to Chowan She previously served as direc tor of housing at Mars Hill Col lege, assistant to the director of admissions at Campbell College, and as dean of admissions at Tift College in Georgia. As associate dean of student development, Byrd will supervise all female residence haUs and their staffs, stressing the educa tional nature of residence hall living. She will serve as resident director for Jenkins Hall, and will be the advisor to the college yearbook, Chowanoka. “Much of my professional ex perience has been at small col leges, so I am looking forward to working at Chowan,”states Dean Byrd. “I am anxious to be of service to all students and their needs, but my particular focus is to address women’s issues. Dr. James Edwin Rogers Dr. James Edwin Rogers has joined the Department of Fine Arts at Chowan College as pro fessor of music. From Daleville, Alabama, Dr. Rogers holds the B.S. degree in music education from Jackson ville State University and the master’s degree in music with emphasis in education from Georgia State University. He also holds the Ph.D. in education with majors in music education and secondary education from the University of Alabama. Dr. Rogers has fifteen years of experience as a band director in public education. As professor of music at Chowan, he will teach music theory and applied instru mental music and direct the col lege stage band. He and his wife, Janet, reside in Murfreesboro. Alison D. Boeshe m Alison D. Boeshe, A.T..C. has joined the faculty at Chowan College as athletic trainer. She will also instruct the courses in athletic training in the department of physical education. She holds the master’s degree in education with emphasis in athletic training from Old Do minion University in Norfolk; and the B.S. degree in physical education with emphasis in sports medicine also from Old Domin ion University. Boeshe previously served as a supervisor and instructor at Hampton University in Hampton, Va. where she provided supervi sion in athletic training principles. She served as an instructor at Old Dominion University. She holds certification from the National Athletic Trainers Association. Lee Fitzwater Lee Fitzwater is the new chief of the campus safety and security department at Chowan College. He joined the staff in September and supervises a staff of ten secu rity officers on the college cam pus. From Como, Fitzwater is a graduate of Murfreesboro High School, and the Virginia Depart ment of Corrections Basic Acad emy. He also graduated from Crater Criminal Justice Academy in Petersburg, Virginia. He is completing the associate degree in criminal justice. “I am glad to be at Chowan College. We are attempting to make security more visible on campus with the new information center. It is our goal to meet the needs of the students at any time, night or day,” states the new chief of campus safety and security.
