Braves raise record to 3-2 overall By Chris Sandbank Sports Editor The Chowan Braves football team continued through the season with wins in games four and five. The Braves defeated Georgia Mili tary in the Homecoming game and knocked off Potomac State the following week. Garrison Stadium was packed for the Georgia Military Bulldogs and the crowd saw a very exciting game. Georgia Military struck first on a 12-yard touchdown pass to go up 7-0, and that was the score at the half. The Braves drove 76 on 10 plays and Brian Goff hit Terry Williams on a 9-yaiid touchdown pass with 8:36 remaining in the thiid quarter. Giersbook’s extra point cut the Bulldog lead to 13-7. With Chowan still tailing late in the fourth quarter, Kevin Rast completed two passes to wide- receiver Jerry Scalzo for a com bined 37 yards. With 10 seconds remaining, Rast hit Theron Davis on a 42-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 13-13. Eddie Giers- brook connected on the extra point to give the Braves an exciting 14- 13 win. The following week the Braves traveled to Kyser, West Virginia to battle with Potomac State College. Only 49 seconds into the game, Chris Feggins ran 69 yards to the Potomac State two-yard line. Feggins took it in for the score on the next play and Giersbrook’s extra point gave the B raves an early 7-0 lead. Potomac State scored for their first and last time of the day four minutes later and their two-point conversion gave the Catamounts an 8-7 lead. Kevin Burgess picked off his fourth interception of the season M!eyJt)!aJUi)itjamwr9ls.#sucfi)ess By Marty Grebing, Editor After a long and grueling com petition, the first Chowan intramu ral beach volleyball tournament of 1991 has come to an end. The tournament consisted of two parts: the initial ranking and the actual tournament. For the first two weeks, each of the two-man teams played several games, thereby receiving a seed according to fteir record. Many games were canceled, postponed, or forfeited, but overall, the seed ing was successful and drew a lot of attention. The actual tournament was very competitive all the way through. A total of nineteen teams fought it out on the court to try to win the first place title. The tournament lasted from October 7th to October 15th and was single eliminatioa After all was said and done, John Taylor and Don Donatello took first place by beating Rich Gray and Ralph Halacheff in the finals. All in all, the tournament was a success. Everyone had fun and enjoyed diving in the sand every chance they got. If you liked this tournament or you like to play but didn’t make it this time, then keep an ear open. SGA will be sponsor ing an indoor tournament, much like the intramurals, with the win ners getting a weekend in Daytona Beach. and returned it 78 yards for the score to regain the lead for the Braves. With the win, the Braves were 3-2 overall and 1 -0 in the Coastal Conference going into the November match up aginst the Montgomery Knights. Lady Braves continue roll— 16th in nation By Chris Sandbank Sports Editor The Chowan Lady Braves vol leyball team is still having an ex cellent season as they are now ranked 16th in the nation with a 28- 7 record. On October 16 in the Helms Center, the Lady Braves easily handled Meredith College and Christopher Newport College. Against Meredith, Chowan won the first game by a score of 15-2 and won the next game 15-12. The Lady Braves took on Christopher Newport College next and outscored them by a combined 30- 7 in two games by the scores of 15- 4 and 15-3. The Lady Braves competed in the Region X Tournament at North Greenville College in South Caro lina, October 31 to November 1. Chowan is slated to be the number 1 seed entering the tournament Golfers having another great season By Chris Sandbank Sports Editor The Chowan Braves golf team is having another great season. In the last week of September, the Braves traveled to Portsmouth, Va. to compete in the Newport News Invitational at Sleepyhole Golf Course. The four-team tournament featured Chowan, Hampton, Lou- isburg, and Newport News Ap prentice. The Braves won the tour nament with a team total of 299, which was 24 strokes ahead of the second place team. Chowan had two medalists in the tournament as Albert Flanagan shot a 72 and Rick Peel shot a 74. On October 9 the Braves com peted in the Louisburg Tourna ment with Louisburg and Edge combe Community College. Chowan’s total was 295 and the Braves won by 14 strokes. Rick Peel, Lance Wilson, and Albert Flanagan each shot a 73 for Chowan. The Braves raised their record to 20-3 after the win. Topping off that record the Chowan golfers recently won the Carolina Invitational Golf Tour nament, walking away with an other big seasonal winning trophy.
