Facing strong competition SMOKE SIGNALS, December, 1991 — Page 3 Wrestlers aim for winning season The Braves wrestling team opened its season November 8-9 by competing in the ten-team Pembroke State Invitational Tour nament held at Pembroke, NC. The Braves faired well in its first competitive action of the year as they placed four in the semifi nals, three of which advanced to the championship round. At 118 points, Chowan’s Taris Smith (Swansee, SQ lost in the semis and finished fourth. Nathan Ludke (Accokeek, MD), wrestling in the 126-pound class, blanked second-seeded David Renaud (2-0) of Campbell College to move into the fmals where he was defeated by a 6-3 count by top- seeded Jeff Bedard of Carson- Newman College. Chowan fresh man Corey Dye (Rock Hill, SC), wrestling at 134 pounds, also ad vanced to the finals by ousting second-seeded Leroy Shackleford (1-0) of Wilkes Community Col lege. In the finals. Dye faced two- time defending tourney champion Avery Winford of Pembroke State and Winford successfully defended his title by blanking Dye 7-0. In the 150-pound classification. the Braves’ Ed Gore (Conway, SC) surprised the entire field by upset ting top-seeded Jeff Wilder (Pem broke State) 3-1 in overtime to move on to the championship round. There, Gore squared off against second-seeded Joe Mickle of Wilkes Community College and in another close battle. Gore came up on the short end of a 3-2 over time decision. The Braves loaded the vans and traveled to Boiling Springs, NC, November 13 for their first official team outing of the season against Region X opponent Anderson College and host school Gardner- Webb. Chowan squared off against region foe Anderson in the open ing match where the Braves pre vailed 30-9. In the 118-pound matchup, Chowan’s Amador Pa dilla (Miami, FL) hammered out a 6-3 decision followed by Ludke’s 8-6 victory during the 126-pound confrontation. Dye was a winner in the 134-pound class via a pin- fall, while Ken Ranfone (Spring Hill, FL) gained a 6-3 decision at 142. After losing at 150, Gore at 156 pounds, and Angel Vazques (Miami, FL) wrestled at 167 and got the Braves back on the right track as they both captured pinfall victories. TTie Braves wrapped up the match on a winning note, when heavyweight Ron Timpanaro (Clearwater, FL) won by pinfall. Chowan then set its sights on Gardner-Webb College, a NAIA Division II program, and in a hotly contested match, the Braves came out on the short end of a 23-19 outcome. Claiming wins for the Braves were Ludke, Dye, Gray, Roarty, and Taris Smith. By gain ing a split in the tri-match, Chowan’s overall record now stands at 1 -1 while its Region ledger is 1-0. The Braves went out of confer ence the weekend of November 22-23 competing in the prestigious Carolina Open held in Chapel Hill, NC. Chowan placed two in the top three with Dye finishing second and Ludke placing third both in the 126-pound class. The Braves headed back into action December 4 when they tangled with the Ship builders of Newport News Appren tice School in a dual match in Newport News, VA. j Lady Braves 1991-92Volleyball Team Trudel, Lindstrom win honors Lady Braves conclude volleyball competition with 32-10 record The Lady Braves volleyball squad concluded their regular sea son the weekend of October 25-26 hosting non-conference foe Ca- tonsville Community College and conference rival Anderson College. In its opener against Anderson, the Lady Braves were dealt a 2-15, 10-15,15-11,10-15 setback which left Anderson with the Region’s number one seed (both teams fin ished regional and conference play at 5-1 to share conference honors, but Anderson was awarded the higher region seed due to total points scored). Following the loss, Chowan rebounded to defeat Catonsville Community College 15-10, 15-4 before concluding its regular sea son the next day when the Lady Braves again clipped CatonsviUe 15-10,15-3. Tournament Competition The Lady Braves, armed with an outstanding 30-8 regular season record, competed in the Region X Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina, October 31 through November 1. Seeded second in the five-team affair, Chowan took on third- seeded Spartanburg Methodist during Thursday’s opening round where the Lady Braves posted a 10-15,15-4,15-9 victory. With the first round win, Chowan advanced to Friday’s winner’s bracket matchup against top-seeded Anderson College where they dropped a tough 15-6, 9-15, 15-9 match. The loss forced the Lady Braves into an elimination contest against North Greenville where they topped the Lady Mounties 15-10, 12-15,15-8. With only a 30-min- The 1991-92 Lady Braves Basketball Team Lady Braves basketball team seeks to improve on past records The Lady Braves opened their 1991-92 schedule the weekend of November9-10 participating in the Mount Aloysius Tournament held in Mount Aloysius, Pennsylvania. Saturday evening, the Braves went against the defending Michigan JUCO champions. Highland Park College. In a closely contested battle, Chowan trailed by just five points (32-27) at half time and were in range to pull off an upset until Highland Park pulled away during the game’s final three minutes to take a 78-61 victory. Sophomores Angie Alien (Virginia Beach, VA) (21 points), Sara Jones (Hampton, V A) (19 points, including four three pointers), and Rose Ellis (Wytheville, VA) (11 points) paved the way for the Lady Brave.s The following afternoon, Chowan faced the host team Mt. Aloysius, and once again played tou^ during the opening half be fore losing 94-55. Charita Burke’s (High Point, NC) 21 points topped JJJS J^ady Bfaves’ scoring attack and she was followed by Allen with 11 points and nine points from freshman Moneka Huntley (Jef ferson, SC). The Lady Braves returned to the Helms Center the following weekend to sweep past a pair of opponents during a four-team tournament. Friday, the Lady Braves raced to a 37-19 halftime lead over Denmark Tech before finishing off their South Carolina visitors during the final 20 min utes enroute to a 66-33 victory. Sophomore forward, Angie Allen pumped in a game-high 25 points to pace the Chowan attack. Fresh man guard Sara Jones popped home 14 points followed by 11 points each from sophomores Charita Burke and Rose Ellis. Saturday found Chowan facing Baltimore Community College and the Lady Braves, who led 34- 15 at the break, again placed four in double figures on the way to a convincing 70-31 win. Allen led all scorers with 17 points, while freshman Moneka Huntley chipped in 16 points. Ellis and Jones rounded out the double-digit attack with 12 and 10 point apiece. Chowan, 2-2, traveled to Lou- isburg for a three-day tournament November 23-25 which featured eight teams before breaking for the Thanksgiving holidays. Re sults of the tournament will be featured in next month’s issue. Chowan, who finished with an outstanding 32-10 record, placed a trio of its players on the All-Re- gion X team as sophomore Cap- tainPatty Trudel, sophomore Mary Grimm, and freshman Jody Lind strom were named to the prestig ious squad. Lady Braves coach Janet Collins saw two of her preformers tabbed as members of the All-T oumament team with the inclusion of Trudel and Lindstrom.
