Volleyball champions are named Beach volleyball is the fasteat growing sport in the United Stales, and if you havent been keeping at eye on the beach courts located next tothe Braves Den, you have missed some good actioa Lairy Meeks, head of Chowan intramurals, organized a very suc cessful beach volleyball tourna ment The event lasted several wedcs, the first of which were fior the purpose of placig or seeding each two-man teams for the up coming toumament. After playing in the nonnal season, each team was placed in round-robin single elimination toumament that lasted approxi mately twowedcs. Each of the 19 teams got the chance to play about every other team in the regular season, thereby giving a fairly accurate measure of the placement in the tournament that they should receive. After all was said and done, the champions were the team of Jon athan Taylor and Andy Jones with a perfect record of twenty wins and no losses. Second place went to Shane Crandal arxl Don Donatello. Each member of the first and sec ond place teams received troj^iies (and bragging rights) for their ef forts. Our Chowan Braves’ football season is off to a rough start this year. On Septem ber 5th, the Braves, met the Appren- ■ tices of Newport News. In the first quarter, Chucky Ingrams’ beautiful 68 yard run through the broken field tied the game at 6-6. A slow second and third quarter left the Braves on the tail end of a 27 to 6 score going into ttie fourth quarter. With 8:39 left in the game, Silas George caught an 11 yard Corey Simples pass to bring the score to 27-12. The final score of the game was on an 8 yard nin by Simples. That was fol lowed by a 2-point conversion pass that George received from SimpJes. Fmal score; Apprentices - 27 Braves - 20 Defensively, the Braves were lead by their linebackers including Ben Peny (15 tackles), Bemanrd Siaki (13 tackles), and Steve Dees (10 tackles).
