Vol.l, No. 4 North Carolina School of the Arts November 4, 1966 Religion and Arts Seminar SIX TO SING WITH GUILD Six voice majors have been selected to be guest singers with the Winston- Salem Singers Guild.The Guild will be performing Dr. Vittorio Giannini's '* Canticle of the Martyrs' " next week at Salem College. The singers from the North Carolina School of the Arts in clude Barbara Efland, Georgyn Geetlein, Robert Daniel, Hugh Harvey, Doug Decatur, and Don Litaker. The projects in choral singing at NCSA are under the direction of Mr. Phillipe Buhler. BUTT TAKES FIRST PLACE IN CONTEST James Butt, NCSA high school junior, took the first place in piano competition sponsored by the North Carolina Music Teachers' Association held at Salem Collegf, Saturday, October 29. Bruce Moss, a high school senior, won second place. Participating in the contest were students from all over the state. Mr. Harry Wells, a faculty member of Lenlor Rhyne College, judged the contest. James Butt, 16 years old, is from Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Returning for his second year at NCSA, he studies with Howard Aibel. In the contest James performed the ListtHungarian Rhapsody and a movement from Hindemith's Second Sonata. James will go to New Orleans later in the school year to perform in the regional contest. CAMERA BEGIN S A SNGERS EASON The Camerata Singers, a select group of twelve voice majors at NCSA has begun an action- packed season. The group has performed for the Women of Radio and Television at the Robert E. Lee Hotel. Plans are being made for their concerts at NCSA as well as other schools in Winston- Salem. The Cameratas have also been invited to perform at The " A Coeur Joie " Choral Movement at the ( cont'd p.2 ) On Wednesday, November 9j Dr., Vittorio Giannini, president of the North Carolina School of the Arts, will be the featured speaker at the Religion and Arts Seminar, held in the girls’ dorm at 8;30 p.m. The format of the evening will follow the lines of an open discussion. Born in Philadelphia In 1903, Dr. Giannini won a scholarship at the Giuseppe Verdi Con servatory in Milan at the age of nine. He studied with Martini and Trucco after his return to New York in 1917, and proceeded to win a Julliard graduate school scholarship In composition and vlollno In 1932 he won the Grand Prlx de Rome In composition and studied at the American Academy in Rome for four years. Since 1939, when he was appointed composition and orchestration teacher at the Julliard School of Music, he has taught at the Manhatten School of Music and the Curtis Institute® Dr. Giannini holds honorary Doctorate of Music and Doctor of Laws degree. He Is a member of the Board of Directors of " The Bohemians Fellow of the International Institute of Arts and Letters, Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, and former Director of the Julliard Project for Music Repertory In public schools. YTfVK€.ULp ClcLSSes MADUB3A INSTRUCIS Gonzalo Madurga, actor and noted artist from New York, recently completed instructing students of the Drama Department in the art of theatrical makeup. The training was intensive for two weeks during Madurga's visit here, and the students learned much about corrective and character makeup» " It's more than painting a face, " commented Madurga. " One must think in terms of charact erization as well as visual effect. If an actor cannot create in his face the same character he portrays with his mind and body, his work will be out of jointo" Madurga, besides professional makeup work, has recently done several plays with the New York Shakespeare Festival and the Morris Repertory Theater in Morristown, N.J. He has appeared on such television programs as Theatre '62, DuPont Show of the Week, The Defenders, Armstrong Circle Theatre, E3q>lorj.jrig.,_ -F-or- The- -People. Planning Committee Selected The Planning Committee for the school year 1966-67 has recently been named.They include the following: Robert Listokin, Music department; Duncan Noble, Dance department; Ed Kenestrick. Drama department; William Greene, Academic department; Peter Borchard, college; Heath Hanner, high school; Steve Hewitt, high school; and Margie Perkins, college . Bruce Stewart and John P.
