Vol. 1, No. 14 North Carolina School of the Arts April 21 TARTUFFE" HAS GUEST DIRECTOR The drama department’s latest production, "Tartuffe," to be previewed April 25, 26, and 27, will be produced under the direction of William Woodman of New York. Before coming here, he directed the New York premier of Chekhov’s ”The Wood Demon” and wa DANCE N EWS Guest teachers, visiting com panies, lecturers, and future pro grams are of primary intrest in the dance department. On Monday April 10, the dancers invaded Chapel Hill to see a performance by Merce Cunningham and his Modern Dance Company. On the next day, ten of the modern dancers participated in a modern class taught by Cunningham who is a student of Martha Graham and the School of American Ballet. In 1950, he formed his own company. The use of electronic music and the informality of presentation proved to be a new experience. BARNES LECTURES DANCERS NCSA was very honored and privileged to have as their guest lecturer Monday, April 17, Clive Barnes. Barns is a famous dance critic of the New York Times and was recently appointed drama critic for the Times. The lecture was on "Dance Critism" but other ideas of intrest to all were also presented. After his talk there was a discussion period in which students and faculty had an opportunity to ask questions. Mr. Barnes was sponsored by the Schools of Music, Drama, and Dance. ' TALLCHIEF to visit NCSA One of America’s greatest ballerinas- Maria Tallchief- will be visiting NCSA on April 21- 23. She will teach a master class on Friday the 21st. Maria Tallchief, of American Indian lineage, has been soloist with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and with the New York City Ballet. Most recently, she has retired from the stage and is only appearing as guest teacher and per former. 3 associate producer of Synge’s "Dierdre of the Sorrows" for Off-Broadway. He has directed for four of the country’s leading professional theatres: The Cleveland Playhouse, Virginia’s Barter Theatre, The Front Street Theatre in Memphis, Tennessee, and The Hartford Stage Company in Hartford, Connecticut. Woodman has taught at the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal and at Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He served as co-director of the Robin Hood Theatre in Wilmington, Delaware, for three seasons and worked for several seasons as stage manager for the American Shakespeare Festival at Stratford, Connecticut. Woodman has an A.B. degree from Hamilton College at Clinton, N.Y. and a master of fine arts degree ftom Columbia University at New York. OPE'RA WORKSHOP William Woodman, director of "Tartuffe," will be in charge of N.C.S.A.'s first opera workshop. The workshop will consist of scenes from Verdi’s "La Traviata", Gounod’s "Faust", Smetana’s "The Bartered Bride", and Humperdink’s "Hansel and Gretel".
