Essay Page 3 R€U €UJS THE COURTSHIP OF MILES STANDISH A WEEKEND; NEW YORK CITY by Kathy Fitzgerald ^ Through, funds donated by Thomas Kenan, a group of students from the Dance Department were permitted to visit New York City and to see two performances of the New York City Ballet over the weekend of February the first. In varying degrees of insanity, we trondled through the Lincoln Tun nel in our grumbling bus, having left Winston-Salem twelve hours be fore. We were liberated from the obnoxious vehicle to check into the New Yorker Hotel and we spent Friday night roaming the perilous city. Saturday morning, a few of the students watched a class taught by Alexandra Danilova and Muriel Stuart at the School of American Ballet while others continued their sight seeing. At 1:45 we assembled at the New York State Theater in Lincoln Center. The matinee performance consis ted of four ballets: SWAN LAKE, FIREBIRD, TARANTELLA,and NEW W0RK#2. Patricia McBride's "Odette" was ex quisitely moving; Violette Verdy's "Firebird," precise yet exciting. Edward Villella displayed his usual bravura in "Tarantella" with his double "Dumbfound-the-audience" en I’air, his jangling tambourine and intensity of his ora personality. After a short rest (just enough time to lose Lincoln Center and find it again), we returned for the even- ing performance. This consisted of A HIKE , A mOD by Celia S'pa:pgev The laughter of the girls' faded as the mist enveloped the pasture in which they were hiking. One by one they drifted apart, each to be alone with her thoughts. Fog and meadow...that was all. No man-made object marred the land scape, no animal showed its head, no sound could be heard. My companions were silent, over-come by a mystic force which they could not touch or explain, but could only yield to in its power. This world was only temporary; that's all it could be. Soon the fog began to lift. Man's world ap peared, seemingly from nowhere. The girls, awaken from their reveries, began to run and laugh and shout. Their natural, expressive spirit was restored and they could no longer re strain themselves. This made them free; free from themselves, and therefore, free to share themselves with others. by Sandra A ballet that was intended to amuse children succeeded in not only keeping them attentive, but also the entire audience. The recent ballet is "The Courtship of Miles Standish" choreographed by Duncan Noble, a member of the dance faculty at NCSA. The story of Miles Standish is easily understood through the clever demi-character steps of the fifty minute ballet. Each dancer should be commended for their excellent portrayal in "The Courtship of Miles Standish." They had an excitement and spark about their dancing which kept the audience thrilled. To be especially noted were the sailors who, through the typical sailor steps, were able to keep com plete unity throughout their segment of the ballet. Also the three In dians were suspenseful in their jaz- zed-up war dance. The drum beat music added to the effect and the determination in which they danced— jumped and threw their poles stimu lated an enormous reaction. The In dian fight, to the peculiar music "Dance of the Hours" was again out of the ordinary, but worked in keeping everyone suspended in com plete laughter. Gyuli Pandi pcrtrayed Miles Standish with pantomine and dance that was outstanding on a profession al level. He was able to moi'e with a great amount of ease as he kept the audience questioning, what amuse ment he'd come up with next. "Liebeslieder Walzer,"Metastaseis & Pithoprakta" and a repition of Jacques d'Amboise's "New Work //2. "Liebeslieder Walzer" was a tad long but interesting nonetheless, giving us our first view of Suzanne Farrell. "New Work //2" was techni cally better in this performance and Kay Mazzo was even lovelier. The second ballet on the pro gram, Ballanchine's "Metastaseis & Pithoprakta", was simply incredible. The curtain rose. In the first movement's dim lighting, what ap peared to be a gigantic, white mass of protoplasm became visible. To Iannis Xenakis' startling music the organism began to bubble and divide as the individual dancers moved un til, after a frantic interval, it alternately flowed and jerked back to its original, silently seething unity Suzanne Farrell and Arthur Mit chell were stunning as they executed the second movement against a back ground of dancers in stark black and Ronald Bates' effective side and spot lighting. We re-boarded the bus soon af ter the performance and arrived in Winston-Salem on Sunday tired but with new impetus. Williams The two pairs of students who did the roles of Priscilla and John Alden succeeded in convincing the audience of their love for one a- nother. Each of them had a particu lar style of portraying their charac ter, and all brilliantly executed it The four dancers were able to per form seriously, romantically, comi cally, and casually with a great a- mount of poise and technique. Except for the Indian fight the music was that of Gilbert and Sulli van. It was a good choice of music for the exciting atmosphere of Miles Standish. Mr. Noble's "smash hit" succeed ed in many ways and thanks to many participants in the production of "The Courtship of Miles Standish", many elementary grade children were able to enjoy a wonderful afternoon of fun (that's not to forget the big folks too!) Anthony Min- shall Senter threw the jello cube which Randy caught in his mouth at the distance of twenty-seven feet. Despite this outstanding feat arts and academic classes will be continued this week. However, our champion welcomes any challenges.
