Spring Tour Begins

For '‘Guys’ Actor
Stephen Bordner will take his
inspiration from his hat in the N.C.
School of the Arts' production of Guys
and Dolls this week.
Bordner, who plays the crap-
shooring hoodlum Nathan Detroit, will
be wearing a hat worn recently by Sam
Levene, who played Detroit in the
original Broadway production of Guys
and Dolls.
Levene wore the 1940-style
fedora in a recnet Broadway revival
of Thvee on a Horsey a play which is
similar in theme to Guys and Dolls.
Christina Giannini, a niece of
the late Vittorio Giannini,first
president of the School of the Arts,
designed the costumes for Three on a
Horse. When she returned to the
School of the Arts to design sets and
costumes for Guys and Dolls^' she
brought her own collection of 1940
hats and wide ties for the students
to wear.
Miss Giannini designed all 140
costumes for the School of the Arts
production, each of which has some
eight to 10 separate pieces. She
also designed the complicated and
gaudy sets which range from a sewer
to a Cuban nightclub and which even
use neon lighting.
The musical will be presented
at 8:15 p.m. Friday through March 14
in the school theater. Matinee per
formances will be given at 2 p.m.
March 7 and 14. Admission will be

A performance of Stravinsky's
L'histoive du Soldat^ directed and
choreographed by Job Sanders, will
be presented at Wednesday's
convocation in the auditorium. The
cast includes dancers and actors -
the Narrator will be played by Doug
McCorkindale, the Devil by David
Wood, the Soldier by Rick McCullough
and the Princess by Svea Eklof.
The music for the production
will be provided by tape. The
costumes and props were liberated
from various boxes on campus - a
trolley was commandeered from the
cafeteria. The Princess' costume
was designed and executed by Ari
Casper.
The "L'histoire" family extends
an invitation to all faculty and
students to attend Wednesday's per
formance.

and Dolls.

TO PERFORM FRI.
Clifton Matthews, concert
pianist, will give a faculty recital
at 8:15 p.m. Friday, March 13, in
the main auditorium at the North
Carolina School of the Arts.
The concert is open to the public
without charge.
His program will include:
Vartita Ho. 6 in E minor by Johann
Sebastian Bach; Sonata in D major^
K. 32 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart;
Theme and Variations^ Op. 73 by
Gabriel Faure; Out of Doors by
Bela Bartok, which includes With
Drums and Pipes^ Baaarolle, Bag
pipes , Night Music and The Chase.

Spring tour performa
high schools throughout the state
of North Carolina will be given by
the North Carolina School of the
Arts in March, April and May.
The school of drama will tour
western North Carolina for 10 per
formances, two each day, from March
9 through March 13. This tour will
end with a special guest perform
ance on March 14 in Raleigh at 7 p.m.
at Ligon High School for the North
Carolina State High School Drama
Festival.
The drama to be given is Act I
of The Apple Tree^ with book, music,
and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and
Jerry Bock. The Apple Tree, which
was directed for Broadway by Mike
Nichols, is actually three one-act
plays. The first, which will be
presented by the School of the Arts,
is entitled Adam and Eve and is
based on the story by Mark Twain.
The other two in the trilogy are
Passionella, from the story by
Jules Feiffer and The Lady or the
Tiger, from the story by Frank
Stockton.
The School of the Arts produc
tion is directed by David McClung
of the drama faculty. Michael Wies-
man of the design and production
faculty is stage manager. Costumes
and scenery have been designed by
Robert Graff of Brandon, South
Dakota, student majoring in design
and production.
