Agnes de Mille To Speak
At 1970 Graduation
Agnes deMllle will speak at the
1970 graduation at the North Carolina
School of the Arts, to be held
Saturday, May 30 at 11 a.m. in the
main auditorium at the school.
Over 116 students from both
the high school and college divisions
will be graduating this year.Sixty-nine
students will graduate from the high
school division and 47 students from
the college division.
Other weekend activities for
graduation include a buffet dinner,
weather permitting, Friday evening,
May 29th for parents and graduating
students, followed by a faculty
recital that Friday evening.
Agnes deMille is a member of
the Advisory Board of the North
Carolina School of the Arts and was
instrumental in the advisory planning
of the school before the school
opened in 1965. During the first
year of the school, Miss de Mille
visited and spoke to the student
body. She is an American choreog
rapher, dancer, and author, and a
graduate of the University of
California. She studied dance with
Theodore Koslov, Marie Rambert,
Lydia Sokolova, Antony Tudor,
Carmalita Maracci, Edward Caton,
Nina Stroganova. She has given
dance concerts in the U.S., Europe,
Denmark, and France.
Miss deMille choreographed
Blaak Ritual, Three Virgins and a
Devil, Drums Sound in Eadkensaok,
Rodeo, Tally-Ho, Fall River 'Legend,
The Harvest According, Rib of Eoe,
The Wind in the Mountains and The
Four Marys. All but Blaak Ritual,
Drums Sound in Hackensack, and Rodeo
were created for Ballet Theatre.
Rodeo (first staged for the Ballet
Russe de Monte Carlo) has been in the
Ballet Theatre repertoire since the
mid-1940's. She also choreographed a
program toured by her group, the
Agnes deMille Dance Theatre.
She has choreographed for tele
vision, films, and plays. She was an
original member of the National Coun
cil on the Arts and first Chairman
Agnes de Mille
of its dance panel (1965). She was
also first President of the Society
of Stage Directors and Choreographers,
Inc.
Among the various musicals
choreographed by Miss deMille are
Carousel, Oklahoma, Romeo and Juliet,
llO in the Shade, and Brigadoon.
She has received the following
academic honors: Honorary Literary
Degree from Mills College, 1952;
Alumni Medal from the Univ. of
California, 1953; Dr. of Human Letters
from Smith College, 1954; Honorary
Literary Degree from Russell Sage
College, 1953; Spirit of Achievement
Award (Albert Einstein College of
Medicine, Yeshiva Univ., 1958); Dr.
of Humane Letters from Hood College,
1959; Dr. of Fine Arts from North
western Univ., 1960.
Miss deMille is author of
Dance to the Piper, And Promenade
Home, To a Young Dancer, The Book
of Dance.
Other prizes include:
N.Y. Critics Prize, 1942-1946; the
Donaldson Award, and the Madame
Oisel Award, 1944; the Antoinette
Perry Award, 1947 and 1962; Lord &
Taylor Award, 1947. She was named
Woman of the Year by the American
Newspaper Woman's Guild in 1946.
She also received the Dance
Magazine Award, 1957, and the Danc
ing Masters Award of Merit in 1950,
and the Capezio Dance Award in 1966.
Freundlich
IbGonduct Class
Irwin Freundlich, member of
the piano faculty at NCSA and
the Juilliard School, has been
invited to conduct a Piano Master
Class in Italy this summer by the
Festival Internazionale "Giornata
Musicali." The session will be
held in Todi, a medieval hill
town in Umbria, twenty-five miles
from Spoleto near Orvieto and Per
ugia. The dates are July 5 to
August 4. Freundlich has not
only invited a number of his top
students at Juilliard (including
Diane Walsh and Mark McCoy) but
will also take four of his students
from the School of the Arts; Alan
Zingale, Karen Davis (who has
been accepted at Juilliard for next
year) , Marsha Pobanz and Cynthia
Siebert. The festival "Giornata
Musicali" is under the direction of
Maestro Claudio del Prato of Rome
and will also include classes in
chamber music and classical guitar.
