Monarchs Lose
Important Conference
Game
By Thomas Wingaard
Contributing Writer
The men’s soccer team lost 6-0 against
Christopher Newport in their second con
ference game of the season. Prior to the
game the Monarchs were ranked 5 th in the
region, and were looking at a top three rank
ing and possibly a national ranking. In their
last two games the team had played some
fine soccer, and they were definitely going
into the game with lots of confidence. The
game started as a tough game with both
teams creating some good goal scoring op
portunities. Then the Monarchs conceded
two goals before half-time and they were
not able to play the kind of play they had
for the last couple of games. The Mon
archs came on the field in the second half
with good spirit, but this was not to be
their day! The men’s soccer team is a
young team with a lot of freshmen and
seem to be on the right track. With some
very talented players and a professional,
hard-working coaching team, they will
definitely have something to say in col
lege soccer in the future. The soccer team
may even see this in effect in their future
games.

Coach Doug Tabbert’s volleyball squad opened
conference play with its best start in six years,
splitting its first four DIAC matches. MC fell to
Greensboro (3-0 home Sept. 21), before beating
Shenandoah (3-2 on the road Sept. 25), dropping a
match to Christopher Newport (3-2 at Shenandoah
Sept. 25) and defeating Ferrum (3-1 on the road Sept.
26.) On Sept. 28, they won against NC Wesleyan on
the road (3-0) and beat Peace on the road (3-2). This
puts the team (9-6) in the season and (3-2) in
conference games.
