Need some ideas for Spring Break?
South Padre Island
By Jami Sheppard
Director of Student Media
South Padre Island is un
doubtedly the HOTTEST destina
tion for a Spring Break trip in the
United States. It’s the party of the
year with 34 miles of sizzling
beaches and 125,000 coeds.
This island resort in the Gulf
of Mexico offers bigger beaches,
legendary nightclubs, live concerts,
beach volleyball, free giveaways,
and the best Tex-Mex this side of
the border! Oh yeah, a Mexico va
cation is just 30 minutes from South
Padre Island, so make it a two-na
tion spring break vacation!
Of course, the South Padre
area is full of interesting cultural at
tractions, although the beach will
monopolize much of your time. The
surrounding areas, including
Mexico, deserve consideration, so
allow yourself enough time to ex
perience these as well. To prepare
for all that South Padre Island has
to offer, pack a variety of clothing,
including beachwear, sports gear,
lightweight shorts and T-shirts for
sightseeing days, and something to
wear out on the town at night. The
weather is generally pleasant, with the
average yearly temperature falling in
the mid-seventies.
Checklist:
- Swimsuit and beach parapher
nalia
- Presentable T-shirt and shorts
- Outfit for nighttime
- Spanish-English dictionary
- Fearlessness (for bungee jump
ing and extreme parasailing)
Good places to go...
“Club Parde Gras,” is scheduled
for Mar. 3 - 24on the beachfront lot
between the Sheraton and the Hohday
Inn. This is the Live Music Venue for
Spring Break ’01, with the following
list of possible shows: Smashmouth,
Collective Soul, Wallflowers, BaHa
Men, Better than Ezra, Toadies/
Pennywise, Big Bad VooDoo Daddy,
Shelby Lynn, Fastball, SR-71, Dogstar
and Vertical Horizon.
Beach events include volleyball,
rock climbing, tug of war, etc. Also
expect DJ spin-offs, themed contests.
Tijuana, Mexico

If you are looking for a place to
party all day and then leave for a more
exciting nighttime scene then Tijuana,
Mexico may be the place for you.
If you can withstand pollution
and overpopulation, Tijuana is a great
place for all day partying. Just remem
ber that you must take the appropriate
precautions when visiting such a place.
The government has made “largely
unsuccessful” attempt at making the
night safe for party-going people. It
has been recommended to steer clear
of Tijuana after 8 p.m.
People who wish to go into
Tijuana from the border should take
licensed taxis between clubs and to
return to the border. The Ucensed taxis
are the ones with black and red license
plates, and have the name of the com
pany, a phone number, and or an ad-

Musicals

I w/on the battle with
Ticketmaster and found myself envel
oped with the sights and sounds of
Les Miserables.
After being happily upgraded
with my seating arrangements, I was
completely entertained by the produc
tion of the stage.
I have always possessed a love
of musicals. Even more, mostly be
cause I see myself as an eccentric art
ist, I love art in all forms.
Anyone can purchase tickets
for any number of off-Broadway
musicals. Tickets usually begin
around twenty-five and reach upward
according to your financial situation.
At the auditorium, people en
joy cold beverages in a large lobby.
Classical piano music plays softly in
the background. Chandeliers sparkle
lights off shiny banisters. A perfect
scene of complete elegance awaits the
patrons.
Les Miserables was spectacu
lar. The sets were functional and cre
ative, set atop a large rotating plat
form fixed parallel to the floor. Large
creations of darkness rotated and
twisted like a large beast as scenes
changed.
The music was spectacular. As
a full-piece symphony accompanied
the theatrics of song, many sniffles
were heard throughout the crowd. I
confess only that I cried at the sheer
emotional forces placed behind each
note and every syllable.
Although, Les Miserables has
ended, the Best of Broadway Theatre
Series continues with The Scarlet Pim
pernel, Mar. 13-18. April brings the
beloved Annie with shows beginning
the 3rd and ending the 8th. Annie Get
Your Gun with Tom Wompat arrives
with guns a blazing May.
Whether you are looking for a
new experience or just a way to im
press your date, Raleigh Memorial
Auditorium offers a variety of shows
with something to please everyone.

Cancun
By Jami Sheppard
Director of Student Media
Cancun is the world’s number
one spring break destination. This
mega resort seems to hold a magnetic
force to college students each year as
spring break comes around. With
some of the world's most beautiful
beaches, best diving and perfect
spring break weather it is not hard to
see why. Yet the natural wonders of
Cancun don’t ever compare to
Cancun’s nightlife and party atmo
sphere. If you have not done spring
break in Cancun, you have not done
spring break.
There are several wonderful
and exotic activities in Cancun to ex
plore. With tourism as one of
Cancun’s major income sources, ac
tivities are in abundance. Cancun is
known for its beautiful scuba diving
areas and mysterious Mayan Ruins.
Chichen Itza is the most famous
Mayan Ruins in Mexico. The ruins
are still in good condition and it is
possible for you to climb to the top
of many of these ancient stone

temples.
During the day, you should
consider pursuing the following ac
tivities during your vacation:
Aquaworld, Parque Nizuc, and
Xcaret Aquaworld and Parque Nizuc
are mind blowing water parks.
Plan to keep yourselves occu
pied by snorkeling, wind surfing/ex
treme sports, wave running, and get
ting tan.
At night, you need to hit
City
Myrtle Beach
dress painted on the side.
There are American guided
tours that are based in San Diego, CA
that will steer you to venues with
higher priced food and souvenirs.
One widespread danger to be
aware of are the so-called “date rape”
drugs.
A very popular scam that
Tijuana is well known for is the
“shakedown.” People dress up as po-
hce officers and tell you that you have
broken a law or trespassed, threaten
to take you to jail, and eventually give
in to some kind of financial arrange
ment. The good news is that officers
of the law are not allowed to take
money; all fines are to be paid by mail.
If you are considering Tijuana
as a prime target for your Spring Break
plans be sure to have fun, but make
sure you are aware of your surround
ings.

If you’re into water sports,
beach parties, volleyball, fishing,
golfing, diving, or even people
watching, Panama City is the place
for you this Spring Break.
There is plenty of beach space
to lay and sun in. There are an abun
dance of places to eat at; some of
which are Hooters, Shukum’s Oys
ter Bar, Montego Bay, and Pine
apple Willy’s.
A few clubs to visit while
you’re in Panama City are Club
LaVelva and Spinnaker. Just a few
of the famous guests that have been
spotted in these two clubs alone are
Dennis Rodman, Carmen Electra,
Paulie Shore, and Jamie Foxx.
The “Cabana BeachWalk,”
which is sponsored by Kellogg’s
Rice Crispies, is a place to hang out
where you can call home, email
your friend, or just chill on one of
the abundance of sofas. They have
DJ’s and other live entertainment to
keep you amused throughout the
day.
The best place to go in
Panama City on Spring Break is the
beach. The pristine, white, glow
ing sand gives way to some much-
needed relaxation.

For those of us who lack fi
nances, Spring Break can become a
frightening experience. Cancun and
South Padre Island are distant glim
mers of existence in the horizon.
Take the high school route and go
back to Myrtle Beach, SC (Besides,
it’s the wrong time of year for the
teenagers.)
This town has a lot to offer
everyone. For all you golf lovers.
Myrtle Beach has some of the finest
courses around. If you are hke me
and cannot hang with the multiple
clubs, try any number of the local
miniature golf courses.
There are several area of
shopping such as Broadway at the
Beach and Barefoot Landing.
Barefoot Landing, besides
shopping, has areas of entertainment
such as the House of Blues where
concerts are held almost daily. Alli
gator Adventure was not a side-of-
the-road zoo I expected. It houses
ligers, alligators, crocodiles, and a
wide assortment of reptiles.
Broadway at the Beach is
slightly different. Equipped with
some of the best restaurants such as
Easyriders, Hard Rock Cafe, and
Planet Hollywood, this is the only
place that I have ever seen with two
Ben&Jerry’s! This large open-aired
establishment is home to an IMAX
Theater, a Ripley’s Aquarium, and
soon a Butterfly Pavilion. The
aquarium houses two touch tanks.
One of which houses sharks!
For a short drive. Medieval
Knights offers a wonderful show and
great food. Enjoy the display of
knights in armor fighting to the death
while you much chicken with your
fingers. And just a reminder for those
who have never been, the sparks are
real, the horses are real, and the tor
ture chamber use to be real.
When the night falls on MB,
the town comes alive with the festivi
ties of the night. Back at Broadway,
the shops close but one section stays
open to accommodate all kinds of
clubs. Crocodile Rocks can be found
nestled within the hoards of clubs.
Just look for the loud piano music and
the long lines. It pays to get there
early. Watch and sing as two per
formers play your request on piano,
with no notice. I watched as they
shifted from country to show tunes
to rock. Did they know them all? No,
I only saw them admit to not know
ing one song. Audience participation
is a must at this event.
The Pavilion, just blocks

LaBoom, Fat Tuesday, Pat O’briens,
and Coco Bongo. Also, the infamous
booze cruises wtiich are simply par
ties on house boats are all over the
place (in the water anyway...).
Plus MTV will be there!
Other places to consider going

away on the “main drag,” offers
games, attractions, and rides just like
at a fair. This includes roller coast
ers, water rides, and bumper cars.
If you’re still bored, just
walk down the street. Shops hne the
roads between dance clubs.
If you’re still bored, the
ocean is right across the street. In fact
from several of the rides at the Pavil
ion, you can see the crashing of the
gray Atlantic on the beige sand.
