FCA, What Really Happens There?
Fellowship for Christian Athletes and non-
“The Cave” in Weaver Hall
By David Merrill
Staff Writer
Having fun comes easy here
at Methodist because every
one is a friend, and people love
to have a good time. Every
one knows their next-door
neighbor like a brother or a sis
ter, and you enjoy staying up
into the moming hours talking,
and listening to music, while you
push that un-written paper far
ther and farther into the back
of your mind.
Well, what kind of music are
you listening to? Have you ever
just turned the music off, and
broke out into song, singing
some of those old time favor
ites such as “Jesus Loves Me,”
or “Amazing Grace?” As you
all sing do you suddenly feel that
long night being transfonned
into an exhilarating sing a long,
which triggers emotions, opens
the soul, and makes tears roll
down your face? Then you
look around the room, all you
can really feel is the Holy Spirit
Athletes. 9:00pm in
moving through out each indi
vidual, and you understand the
power of friendship, the power
of love, the power of Christ.
You.get so wrapped up in
song that you close your eyes,
and you see one of your friends
pulling out a guitar, and a mi
crophone, making the room
magically become filled with 50
people you know, 50 people
you might not, but 100 people
that you love, because you re
alize you all have something in
cominon.
You can’t see these people’s
disabilities, their ethnicities, or
race, but you suddenly see
them as people just like you,
just like your fiiends, and filled
with the Holy Spirit from our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
You look around this crowded
room, and you see hands fly
ing, smiles pouring from
people’s faces, and a speaker
giving his testimonial about
when he found the Lord.
You’re astonished, and amazed
at what you see. There is no
fighting, no absurd language;
just peace, understanding, joy,
and love, all being pulled to
gether into this one room.
“Where am I?” You say to
yourself Then your friend
stands up in the front of the
crowd with his guitar, and starts
singing a song, which you’ve
known from childhood.
Tears start sliding down your
already heart-filled face, and
people all around give you
hugs, and hold your hand, and
just sing along with you, be
cause they understand your
feelings, and yes, they love you
for who your are. As the song
continues you start thinking
about your family, your friends,
and people that have passed
on.
You cup your hands around
your head, and sing quietly to
yourself Then you feel a pres-
ence touch your shoulder
which’s leads you to the front
of the room, where your fhend

is playing. You’re not embar
rassed, or scared, but over
filled with love, and happiness.
You give your friend a hug, and
the whole room starts clapping.
“Welcome to FCA,” He says.
You stand back and look at
your close finend through your
soft tears.
You suddenly see him in no
other way before, and you be
gin to understand more about
yourself, and who you really
are. Then your friend reaches
out for your hand, and you
slowly open your blurred, wet
eyes, and feel yourself travel
ing back to your room. Your
eyes fully open to the sound of
your roommates singing Amaz
ing Grace, and all you feel is
peace, and comfort.
Everyone is holding hands
and has tears strolling down
their face. You wonder how
God does it. How can He up
lift so many souls in the playing
of just one simple song? Then
you think back to that room
with those 100 people in it.
Where everyone was singing,
hugging, laughing, and comfort
ing one another.
Finally, you take one last
look at your friends who are
still singing Ainazing Grace, and
you understand. You say to
yourself, “Thank you Jesus, for
first loving us, because it’s your
love we feel in these songs, and
in each other, it’s because of
you we can love one another.”
You get so excited that you
jump up from your bed, and
ask your fiiend what time it is.
He says, after whipping tears
from his face, “ Um, 9;M pm,
Tuesday.”
As you’re overfilled with
joy, you calmiy tell your friends,
“I’ve just learned of a place
where we can go that we can
be with friends who will except
us for who we are, who will
comfort us with their words
and songs, and where the love
of Jesus travels throughout ev
eryone. .. .Let’s go to FCA.”
