II Upcoming MC Events: Battle Of the Wits Wednesday, February 19th 10:00pm StudentUnion Page 8 — Friday, February 14,2003 Work-study program has changed for this spring semester By Vickie Chrisawn Methodist College is in a time of change. One of the major changes to be seen on the campus is the removal of theschool-sponsored work study program. This semester, Methodist College decided to do away with the part of the program that they offered for the students that reside here on campus. Until this semester, Methodist Colege had provided a work-study program for all students who lived on campus as well as the traditional federal work-study program, which is entirely based on financial need from the FAFSA form. Methodist College offered resident students a work-study job even if they did not have a financial need. This semester the college has set in motion something of a trial run to see how it will affect the student popu lation. “They decided to do it in the spring because this is the semester that would affect the least amount of people,” Director of Financial Aid Bonnie Adamson said. “This, at the most, has affected thirteen people this semester,” Adamson said. “The people who already qualified for work-study did not have it taken away.” “As a whole, of all work-study students, only about fifteen percent did not demonstrate a financial need. In the future only about five to seven percent of the studetns here will be affected,” said Adamson. Loan coordinator Denice Carter said, “Any students who currently have work study that are not actally using it to help them should contact the finacial aid office to help other students who are not eligible for work-study due to the new policies.” This not only applies to returning students, but it also pertains to the incoming students according to Carter. The only change is that the people living on campus are no longer guaranteed a work study job. Before this semester, merely living on campus was enough reason for a person to receive work-study forom Methodist College’s standpoint. Now, the only way to getawork-study job now is to demonstrate a finanical need. Methodist College used its own resources to run its resident stu dent work-study program, however, this is not a procedure observed in most colleges. The college has decided that it is more beneficial to end the col- lege-sponsored work-study program and rely only on the federal work- study program for'future financial aid Outdoor club will take stiidents to Key West By RomanTrudnenko From March 14"’ through the 24"’, the Outdoor Adventure Club along with the Student Activities Committee will take a traditional Spring Break trip to Key West, Florida. These ten days of “sun, surf and sight” will be filled with activi ties and adventures for only $30 per student. Certified scuba divers will ex plore the corral reefs of Southern Florida, while everybody else will take in snorkeling and swimming. A trip to historic Fort Jefferson is planned for one of the days of that week as well. Students will visit the Dry Tortugas National Park that is lo cated about 70 nautical miles of Key West. This location, which served as a military fort and a prison, now operates as a resort destina tion. Clear blue-waters ac companied by light sea breezes are thought to cre ate an illusion of a paradise. Methodist College stu dents will stay at a military in stallation called Fort Zachary that is located in a walking distance from downtown Key West. This gives people freedom in the selection of activities. A lodg ing area extends into a strip of clean, private and secluded beach that can be used for sunbathing, swimming and snorkeling. No matter whether you want to lay back and enjoy Florida’s sun, learn more about the history of Key West or explore the underwater world, this Spring Break can offer students something they want. Commuter students are welcome and encouraged to participate. Call (910) 630-7161 for more informa tion.
