THE PEN 13 January has been a month of sen sational happenings in the world of soprts. On the second Southern Cal ifornia, in story book style, defeated Duke at the Rose Bowl in the last few minutes of play. The “Brown Bomber” blasted John Henry Lewis 'into oblivion in less than a round to retain! his title on the 2,'5th. The night of the 26th, St. Aug., after trailing 12-18 at the half, come back in the 2nd ])eriod of defeat Fayette ville 30 — 25, thus, vindicating themselves for the 38-28 “going ov er” theyi had received at the hands of the “Teachers” earlier in the month. With seven games, two of which are wins, under their belts, the “Saints” embark this week to face their most formidable competition for this season. Hampton and Union, especially, will attempt to annihi late the “Saints.” In an effort to prevent just such a disaster, Coach Weatherford has recruited more players from the rank and file of our student body. Among those caught in the draft are Harry Johnson, “Pewee” Sellers and Joe “Boop” LeCompte. All veterans of St. Aug’s 1938 grid wars, they have one point in their favor at least. They can stay off of the Dean’s list. (This seems to be an accoray)lishment, for, when the Dean’s list is posted, Mr. Weatherford will have seven slight ly used basketball uniforms in his office.) Review of Games JAN. 7TH. N. C — 52—ST. AUG. 14 In a disasterous opener against N. C. C. N., the diminutive “Saints” went down in defeat before the gi- cantie “Eagles.” With State’s seven foot guard, Downing, taking the ball off the backboard or knocking down the desperate “Saints’ ’ spot shots, St. Aug’s downfall was in evitable. George Skelly and Atwell Stewart with four points each were high point men for St. Aug., while Knnis scoring 21 of his teams .'52 j)oints, was high-scorer for the “Eagles. ” * * * * JAN. 13TH. —SHAW 29 ST. AUG. 25 In a game which had the Shaw “Bear’s” fur standing on end from fright and Coach Lytle bellowing, “We wuz robbed,” the “Bears” fin ally managed to eke out a victory; but only after 3 of our 1st stringers, McDowell, Stewart and “Chris” iHunt, had fouled out of the game. With three minutes to play» the “Saints” were leading the “Bears” by a single point, but three straight two-pointers by Garner clinched the game for Shaw. For the “Saints,” George Skelly, senior center was high'point man w'ith eight tallies. Donald Garner, Shaw, was best for bis team with 8. Hunter Saterwhite, playing his second varsity game and Melvin McDowell, although not hiehsrorer, played outstandingly for the “Saints.” * * * * JANUARY 14TH FAYETTEVILLE—38 — ST. AUG—28 After playing the “Teachers” to a 15-1.5 deadlock at the half, the "‘Saints” dropped the game to them in the second stanza, when the none too-heavilv guarded Herbin, sharp- shooting Fayetteville guard, went on a rampaee scorinaj 8 straight points.
