The football team started its long trek back up the ladder under the leadership of Joseph Bennett as Captain, Juniors also began, to as sume the leadership of the various clubs. J. Randolph McAlpine was the Associate Editor of the Pen during this yelar. In September 1930, thirty-one members re_entered St. Aue-us. tine’s with the solemn realization that they were Seniors. They had at last reached the last lap on their journey in quest of higher educa_ tion. Quietly they settled into their grooves, to await the call on May 29, 1940. The Class had advanced with Eldon McLean as president. Cer_ tain, member of the class gained re cognition for their work in the clubs, student council and the Pen activities. Rosa Hall won a prize in the creative writing contest among students. Jeff McAlpine, now Edi tor of the Pen, won the Barber Prize speaking contest. McDowell M'as CO captain of the football team Mary Bole-y was president of the “Zetas,” Spencer Albury was president of the “Les Elites” and of the Junior Women’s Auxiliary. Joseph Bennett was president of the Varsity and Chancellor Clubs. Belt.te Banner Mas Secretary of the Student Council. Robert Tillman was an assistant in the Biology De partment and Joseph Bennett was Vice-President of the Student Council. Despite its many errors and other faults, the Class of ’40 has made a definite contribution to St. Augus tine ’s College. It has furnished the nucleus and mainstays of the ath letic tefaims. Its members have been active in the choir, choral and dra.. •matic societies. Its members have furnished much inspirational lead- dership to those who come after. In athletics McDo^vell, McAlpine, Durh'am, Johnson, Bennett, Henrv^ Simpkins, Tillman, Summers, WiL son and Miss Audrey Gibson have been outstanding. In dramatics Jennie Baird, Mary Boley and Spencer Albury have ben outstarid_ ing. In Music, Josephine Challenger, Bette Banner, -Jennie Baird, Mary Boley, Walter Durham, John Simp kins, Prettlophine* Simmons, Wil liam Jackson and Ra/ndolph McAL pine made contributions.
