4 ST. AUGUSTINE’S RECORD ALUMNI NEWS In a recent issue of the Baltimore Afro-American appeared a news story about Alphonso L. Finch, ’32, principal of the Littleton High School, Littleton, N. C. The story reads in part: “Mr. Finch came to Littleton in 1934, fresh from St. Augustine’s College and a short period of graduate study at Columbia University. At Littleton he found five teachers teaching seven years of elementary school work in a four-room building. There were no trans portation facilities. He has added three classrooms and five teachers, plus three years of high school work. There has also been an increase in enrollment amount ing to over 150 pupils, making a total of 500. Ade quate transportation facilities have been obtained, and all teachers hold A certificates.” An addition to the plant is now under consideration. sjc ^ ❖ Tho Eecokd notes the transfer of the Rev. Frederick Ricksford Meyers, ’21, from St. Luke’s Chapel, JSTcw York City, to St. Matthew’s Church, Detroit. The Rev. Mr. Meyers made a fine record at St. Luke s, building up every department of the work to which he went soon after it was established. At St. Matthew’s he succeeds the late Rev. Everard W. Daniel, 99, as rector of one of the oldest and largest Negro parishes in the country. Announcement has been received of the marriage of Mr. Meyers to Miss Helen Marjorie Peebles, of New York City, December 27. i\t ijf JMiss Henrietta Kennedy, ’37, is teacher of English and Frcnch at St. Barnabas’ Mission, Jenkinsville, S. C. She was among tho several alumni who visited the campus during the Christmas season. i'fi « »! Born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Nixon in New York City, November 16, a daughter, Fay Catherine. Mrs. Nixon (Catherine A. Farrar) is of the class of 1932. Mr. Nixon was graduated from the academic department in 1928, and was for a time assistant to tlie proctor. ^ :{( »lc The Rev. John C. Davis, ’32^ has been appointed curate of St. Philip’s Church, Now York City. Mr. Davis had been in charge of St. Matthias’ Church, Asheville, N. C., since his graduation from the Bishop Payne Divinity School. Ho was active not only in his' parish, but in the general religious and civic life of Asheville. He has been an energetic member of the Alinuni Association since his graduation. ^ Leonard B. Hardie, ’37, is employed as a case worker by ]\[ecklenburg County, North Cp’olina, with head quarters in Charlotte. Mr. Hardie did ono year of graduate work at tlie Atlanta School of Social Work. ❖ Miss Wilhelmina T. Roberts, ’37, has had some of her poetry included in the “North American Book of Verse,” a^lew anthology published by Henry Harrison. The Piedmont Churchman (Diocese of Upper South Carolina), in reporting this fact, adds, “The Columbia poet has had poems published in various newspapers and periodicals and u.sed on radio programs.” Miss Roberts is case worker with the Family Welfare Society of Columbia, S. Jackson, ’38, is supervisor of the NYA Rehabilitation Project for physically handicapped young men at St. Paul School, Lawrenceville, Va. Hs * * Ven. John Brown Elliott, D.D., archdeacon of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina, has recently retired after many years of faithful service in the priesthood. Dr. Elliott was graduated from St. Augustine’s in tho class of 1897. He lives in Columbia, S. C. ^ * « ♦ Miss Jessie McDaniel is teaching in the high school at Dora, Ala. Walter R. Slade is a member of the high school faculty of Brunswick, Ga. Both are 1940 graduates. i'» ^ ^ Miss Susie Williams, ’38, has joined the faculty of the high school at Lillington, N. C. ^ ]\Irs. Nannie AVaddell Bryant, ’27, has been in the . public school system of Tarboro, N. C., practically since her graduation. She writes, “I have the reputa tion of always being on time, a trait acquired at St. Augustine’s.” She is active in the St. Augustine’s Club of Eastern North Carolina. ^ Hubert T. Delany, Commissioner of Taxes and As- | sessments of the City of New York,_ was recently unanimously elected to the Board of Directors of the College of the City of New York. Commissioner De lany, who is the son of the late Bishop Henry Beard Delany and Mrs. Nannie L. Delany, is an alumnus of City College, which he entered after graduation from St. Augustine’s in 1919. * ♦ * Miss Marie Nixon, a graduate of St. Agnes Hos pital’s Training School for Nurses, has been appointed superintendent of the Good Samaritan Hospital in Charlotte, N. C. Miss Nixon has been a member of the Good Samaritan staff for several years,_ so the appointment comes as a promotion in recognition of her excellent service there. * * * Dr. Howard Henderson, ’34, has opened offices for medical practice in Philadelphia, Pa. « >i * Rev. Robert J. Johnson, D.D., ’06, assumed charge of All Saints Church, Warrenton, N. C., January 1. He comes from St. Mary’s Church, Hot Springs, Ark., where he has done splendid work for the past several years. Dr. Johnson has had three sons to graduate from St. Augustine’s. The youngest, Francis, of the class of 1939, is now a student at Bishop Payno Divinity School. Prof. Ralph Harlow of Smith College was a recent speaker at mid-week assembly.
