President’s
Inauguration
Is Scheduled
Plans are being completed for
the inauguration of Thomas A. Col
lins as the first president of North
Carolina Wesleyan College on
Founders Day, October 25, accord
ing to Dr. Jack Moore, chairman
of the Inauguration Committee.
Inauguration ceremonies will be
held on the west steps of the Bras
well Administration Building at
3 p. m. Immediately following the
inauguration, a reception will be
held at the president’s home on the
campus.
Registration of special guests
will be held at 11 a. m. in the
Student Union Building, and a
luncheon is scheduled for noon in
the cafeteria.
The Inauguration Committee is
composed of Dr. Jack Moore and
Dr. W. B. Gatewood, representing
the faculty; L. W. Hill of Tarboro
and Authur L. Tyler of Rocky
Mount from the Board of Trus
tees; R. B. Braswell of Rocky
Mount, representing the Rocky
Mount Area Wesleyan Foundation,
and W. Jasper Smith, representing
the CoUege staff.
Faculty Approves
Soph Proficiency
Exam In English
The faculty has approved the
sophomore proficiency examination
in English, to be composed of a
test in spelling and written expres
sion. The spelling test will be made
of 100 words, and will be selected
from a standard word list of 3,000-
4,000 words available in advance
to the students taking the examina
tions.
The expression test will be ad
ministered by the English Depart
ment and the students will be ask
ed to write a composition on a sub
ject in a given length of time.
Our current student body will
take this examination in the second
semester of the sophomore year.
Sophomores failing the test will be
required to repeat the examination
each semester.
This year’s freshmen who fail
the test must repeat it or take for
credit an extra year of English
composition. It is being recom
mended that the sophomores of the
year 1963-64 and those thereafter
must pass this test as a require
ment for graduation.

Freshman Bill Hoyle was elected

sion in a recent meeting of the
Wesleyan Student Government As
sociation.

Presidency
Freshman class officers were
nominated in a recent meeting of
the Wesleyan Student Government
Association. The hopeful candi
dates await election tomorrow,
Thursday, October 12. The candi
date with the simple majority of
the votes will be elected to that
office. If no one candidate receives
a simple majority of votes, there
will be a run-off election between
the two candidates with the highest
number of votes.

Nominees for president of the
freshman class of 1961-62 are Fred
Lunn, Guy Rouse, Kay Hobbs, and
Dan Jacobs.
Nominees for vice president are
Larry Reynolds, Mary C. Hodgin
and Bruce Sharer.
Campaigning for the office of
secretary are Bill Horne, Cherry
Gorham, Butch Nichols and Bar
bara White.
Running for the office of class
treasurer are Rita Linley, Robin
Lunn, Walter White and Larry
Denton.
Alice Kovarco and Bill Herbert
were nominated to represent the
freshman class in the SGA Cabinet.

Movie Series Planned
The film industry has come to
Wesleyan College, at least in part.
Films will be shown once a month
for the length of the series. The
science lecture room, A-105, will
be converted into a movie house for
these occasions.
Included in the series are com
edies, dramas, and mysteries.
Costs of the films arc being finan
ced by a donation of one dollar
from each student interested in
seeing the complete series.
The following is a schedule of
the pictures which will be shown.
ARSENIC AND OLD LACE with
Gary Grant, Priscilla Lane, Ray
mond Massey, Peter Lorre, and
Josephine Hull will be shown on
October 13.
November lO’s movie will be
THE MALTESE FALCON with
Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor,
Peter Lorre, and Sydney Green-
street.
The comedy, THE PHILADEL
PHIA STORY, starring Gary
Grant, Katherine Hepburn, and
James Stewart will be presented
on December 8.
THE STORY OF THREE LOVES
will be shown on January 12. These
three short stories star Pier Angeli,
Kirk Douglas, Leslie Caron, Farley
Granger, James Mason, Moira
Shearer, and Ethel Barrymore, and
are in Technicolor.
February 9 brings VIVA ZAPTA,
a drama with Marlon Brando, Jean
Peters, and Anthony Quinn play
ing the leading roles.
The Marx Brothers wiU play in
a NIGHT AT THE OPERA, a musi
cal comedy, on March 9.
THE MALE ANIMAL with Henry
Fonda, Olivia de Havilland, Joan
Leslie and Jack Carson will be

Day Students
Elect Officers
Day student officers and council-
men were elected recently in the
regular meeting of the Student
Government Association. These
will advise, uphold standards, and
promote the general welfare of the
non-resident students.
Jack Price of Red Oak was elect
ed president. Bonita Pitzer of
Rocky Mount and Nashville was
elected secretary-treasurer. Coun-
cilmen elected were Larry Mat
thews of Sharpsrtjurg, and Jimmy
Wheeler, Tommy Adkins, Brenda
Robinson, Alice Kovarco, Barbara
Hall and Ed Vann, all of Rocky
Mount.
As president of the Day Student
Council, Price will serve as a rep
resentative of the Student Govern
ment Association.
Vann Massey of Ahoskie is presi
dent of the SGA charged with stu
dent government regulations and
charting good student participation
in the life of the College commun
ity.
