Gift Of $500 Establishes
New College Scholarship
A gift of $500 to establish a
scholarship at North Carolina Wes
leyan College has been announced
by Mrs. Charles G. Doak, secre-
tary-treasurer of the Littleton Col
lege Memorial Association, through
which the gift was made.
The scholarship, donated by Mrs.
D. C. Lawrence of Sanford, was
given in honor of Mrs. Emma
Thorton Nowell of Warren County,
Mrs. Lawrence’s sister.
Mrs. Lawrence and Mrs. Nowell
are alumnae of Littleton College,
which was destroyed by fire in
1919. Wesleyan College has made
Littleton’s alumnae honorary mem
bers to head its alumni association.
Mrs. Newell was secretary to
James M. Rhodes, president of
Littleton College, for many years.
She was a teacher of note, and is a
prominent leader in her home town
of Macon. She is the widow of John
S. Newell and is a member of the
distinguished Nationiel Macon fam
ily. She is at present ill in the
Adams-Kinton Home in Lillington.
Mrs. Doak said that the Emma
Thorton Nowell Scholarship and the
Vera Herring student loans will be
granted to deserving young women
from the Littleton College Memor
ial Fund,
Thomas A. Collins, president of
Wesleyan College, has expressed
his gratitude and thanks to Mrs.
Lawrence and other Littleton alum
nae who have contributed to the
college. Collins also expressed his
appreciation to the association for
its selection of Wesleyan College as
the depository of Littleton’s mem
orabilia.
Food For Thought
“Within limits of normality,
every individual loves himself. In
cases where he has a deformity or
abnormality or develops it later,
his own aesthetic sense revolts
and he develops a sort of disgust
towards himself. Though with
time, he becomes reconciled to
his deformities, it is only at the
conscious level. His sub-conscious
mind, which continues to bear the
mark of the injury, brings about
certain changes in his whole per
sonality, making him suspicious of
society.”
—R. V. Wardekar in a
pamphlet on leprosy
DID YOU KNOW?
Among the 50 states, excluding
Alaska and Washington, D. *C.,
three states permit a boy to com
pete in an unlimited number of
track events and three more have
partial limitations. Seven states
limit the men to five events, while
19 limit participation to four events,
and 18 states limit men to three
events for a state meet. Many
states limit a man to the number
of running events over 440 yards.
Another interesting fact is that
whereas the majority of the states
specify opening starting dates for
football and basketball, only 17 do
the same for track, and only eight
states and D. C. limit the number
of meets in which a school may
compete.
