THE WESLEYAN DECREE
The Bishop's Corner
g By HODGIN AND MILLER
E.ven though our first seasonal baseball gaimes, scheduled early last
week aigainst Wesley College of Dover, Delaware, were canceled be
cause of rain, prospects for w;nn ng the two (games were high.
In practice sess ons, the Bishops have been displaying a considerable
amount o-f diamond skiU, and by now seem well on the road toward
preparedness when they meet the C.mels of Buies Creek’s Campbell
College on April 4.
Diamond Lineup Announced
Ed Schultz, return'ng letterman and leading pitcher last year, rates
first position on the mound for this season.
Behnd the mask, and calling signals, will be catcher Pete House
newcomer on the team, who is already displaying potential top merit.
Returning letterman Wayne Cooper has tap bid for first 'base. An alble
baseman, Wayne’s strongest po'nt is his hitting abil.fy.
Freshman Don Everette will be playing the position of shortstop. He
has looiked very igood in practice and is expected to team up with second
baseman Matthews in double plays.
Another newcomer. Lew Ransom, is expected to develop skill with a
few -games under his belt.
Larry Matthews, sometimes called that “fancy second baseman,”
will be monopolizing his comer on the diamond again this year. Mat
thews hit the only two homo runs of last year and both of these wlere
in the same game.
Left field will be taken Ujp toy newcomer David Brady, who has already
exhibited outstanding batting ability as well being as an able leather-
man. He handles the ball well and may have a chance to prove this on
the pitcher’s mound before the season is finished.
Versatile veteran A. T. Neville may be found at center field, or tliird
base or almost anwhere he is needed this year. He is one of the best
third basemen in the county, and exhibits a smoothness when handling
the ball.
Ball Park Nears Completion
A tip of the hat is in order for Bill and Gary Garlowe, Ed Schultz, and
Don Everette for their hard work on our baseball diamond. The major
field having been completed, they are now cutting pipe for the fence
fixings. A backstop has already 'been erected, and the diamond has
taken on a professional look.
