couraged and dismayed while
a victorious freshmen class was
congratulating itself for a job
well done.
The opening event occupied
the volleyball court with a
volleyball court with a match
between upperclass girls and
freshmen girls, the winners to
be determined by a two-out-of-
three advantage. The freshmen
went on to take the first two
games and win in an admirable
fashion. This, however, was just
the beginning. The next event
saw a surprisingly good girls’
basketball team overwhelm their
upperclassmen. By this time you
could hear occasional excuses
made by upperclassmen along
the sidelines and a number of
freshmen were seen removing
their head pieces in anticipa-
t'on of the victory they now had
in reach.
This victory came soon in the
first event participated in by
the masculine sex. A strongly-
organized and sharp-shooting
squad of freshmen hoopmen
created a halftime advantage
of 34 to 25 and went on to
capitalize their first half score
with a 60 to 39 triumph. If this
\/asn’t enuogh for the upper
classmen, the football game
proved to be, for they were
looking ahead in anticipation of
victory in this event. The fresh
men, however, had gained con
fidence which was not to be
denied. So what was supposed
to have been an event for the
upperclassmen ended in a seven
to four victory by an exuberant
freshman team.
Freshmen in cars with horns
honking were next seen in a
parade to the baseball field and
tlie final event, the tug of war.
The first combat turned women
against women with nine upper-
class girls ending up in the
mudhole. The next event finally
saw some smiles break out on
the faces of tlie upperclassmen,
for this proved that they were
not to be beaten in everything.
At last they compounded enough

Sports Program
Will Be Varied
This year’s Physical Educa
tion program under Mr. Donald
Scalf will divide freshmen and
sophomores into different ac
tivities. For the first eight weeks
the freohmen classes will par
ticipate in basketball while up-
perclassnien will endeavor to
play tag football. For the re-
niaining eight weeks the fresh
men will attempt to show their
skills at tag football and the
sophmores will participate in
soccer.
During the first week of Octo
ber the men's Physical Educa
tion Department hopes to en
courage and organize intra
mural teams. All male students,
day students included, are ask
ed to take part. The first sport
to be engaged in will be volley
ball. Plans for future intra
murals include tag football,
basketball, tennis, golf, table
tennis, and softball.
The women’s Physical Educa
tion program has also been
divided into different sports.
Mrs, Jean Edge has planned
for freshmen to play volleyball
for the first part of the semest
er, and to follow that with
tumbling for the final eight
weeks. The sophomore’s pro
gram will be made up of speed
ball and later tumbling will take
over for the remainder of the
semester.
There will be no intramurals,
as such, offered for women this
semester. However, Mrs. Edge
wiU be available every Tues
day at four o’clock in order to
organize teams for competitive
sports for those women who are
interested.

course designed with emphasis
on individual case studies. This
course will aid teachers in the
organization of materials and

The course wUl be offered for

will meet each Saturday morn
ing from 9:30 a. m. till 11:30

strength and ten upperclassmen
brought ten freshmen through
the wading pool. This was not
the end: soon eight upperclass
girls, many of them a little
damp from the first encounter,
thrilled their collegues by pull
ing eight freshmen boys into the
water. Five upperclassmen, how
ever, soon found the going a bit
difficult for them as ten fresh
men ladies led them to their
doom.
The final event of the day,
a tug of war between all fresh
men and all upperclassmen,
was prevented due to a con
tinued breaking of the rope when
so much pressure was applied
to it. Mr. Garlow pointed this
out and then congratulated the
freshmen class for a job well
done as field day for 1962 came
to a close.

Freshmen Celebrate;
Beanie Caps Removed
To celebrate the victory of
the Freshmen over the upper
classmen on Field Day, a dance
was held in the Student Union
building Saturday night, Sept.
29. Music was provided by the
new juke box.
During the dance. President
of S. G. A., Gary Garlow, an
nounced that the Freshmen, be
cause of the victory during field
day, could remove their beanies
after two v'eeks of wearing
them.
The dance was enjoyed by
those who attended, but be
cause of the small participation
the Social Commission was con
cerned.
Social Commission
The Social Commission wants
to encourage greater participa
tion in dances of this type that
are a part of the regularly sched
uled events of the year.
Inasmuch as it would not be
practical to have a band for
every dance, the Social Com
mission feels that it is neces
sary to use the juke-box on
some occasions and because of

Saturday classes it is expected
that more students will be able
to attend dances scheduled for
Friday and Saturday nights.
These dances can be schedul
ed almost as often as the stu
dents would like providing they
do not conflict with other events.
To determine the student de
mand for such dances, the So
cial Commission can only evalu
ate it by the number of stu
dents participating. Therefore,
if continued scheduling of danc
es is wanted by students, their
participation is necessary.
