Vage 6 THE WESLEYAN DECREE Oct. 24, 1962 Textile Design Exiiibit On Display An exhibit entitled “The In fluence of the Italian Renais sance in Textile Design” will be on display in Room 189, Pear sall Classroom Building, just across from Garber Chapel through Oct. 27. The exhibit was organized and is circulated by the Scala- mandre Museum of Textiles in New York. It was assembled to show the various phases of fabric production in the four most important weaving cen ters, Lucca, Venice, Florence, and Genoa. The show consists of many fabrics and photographs of paint ings of the period. Renaissance portrait paintes frequently created their own textile designs foi' the robes used in their paintings. These motifs were copied by the guilds of weavers. They are illustrated in the exhibit by colored prints of such masters as Botticelli, Fra Angelico, and Gozzoli, be- s'de which are displayed the textiles from which they were borrowed. Age Of Pageantry The Italian Renaissance was an age of pageantry, color, and luxury, as seen in the exhibi tion of Scalamandre silks. The patterns for the textile designs were borrowed from many lands, blended and welded together in compositions that reflected the individualism of each city where they were woven. The proximity of the old ori ginals and fhe textiles woven in this country permits close scru tiny and comparison. They show the remarkable progress that the United States has made in the silk weaving industry. They possess all the beauty and tex ture of the old world silken tex tiles. The exhibition is completely labeled wHh period and de scription of each fabric. It will be of special interest to those interested in textiles as weU as of value to students of interior decoration and textile design. The exhibit will be open daily from 9 a. m. to 12 noon and 1 p. m. to 9 p. m. There will be no admission charge. MERLE NORMAN COSMETICS ^ Free Facials Tel. GI 2-6214 125 S. Main St. Mebane Shoe Co.
