Wesleyan Will Receive Fountain As Gift

Lewis Hoy, pianist, will ap
pear in North Carolina Wes-
leyan’s concert series on
Thursday evening, Maj’ch 12,
at 8:15 in Garber Chapel.
The concert is free of charge
and the public is invited to
attend.
Mr. Hoy, a native of James-
viUe, Wisconsin, is currently
Assistant Profesisor of Music
and Chairman of the Piano
Department at St. Andrews
Presbyterian College. He has
appeared as concerto soloist
with a number of university
symphony orchestras in this
country and with the Florida

Ed Lewis has been elected
the vice president of the SGA
for the remainder of the aca-

tion vacated when Robert
Stephens became president.

been active in other phases
of student government work,

In this same election, class
officers were elected to fill
positions vacated for various
reasons.
Carl Alderman was elected

academic year will be Fritz
Smith. Lois Lambdin will fill
the vacancy for secretary.
Lois is one of Wesleyan’s
first cheerleaders.

solo recitals widely in the
mid-west, southeast and in
Europe.
Educated at Drake Uni
versity, Luther College, and
Florida State University, Mr.
Hoy has studied with Elvin
Schmidt, Ernest von Dohnan-
yi, and Edward Kilenyi. While
a student at Luther College,
he won the Young Artist Con
test of the National Federa
tion of Women’s Clubs.
At St. Andrews Mr. Hoy is
also coach of the golf squad,
a duty in lime with his past
experiences as a high school
and college athlete. He was
a letterman in track, golf,
football, and basketball in
high school and co-captain
of the Iowa state champion
ship football team. He at
tended Drake University on
a football scholarship and
for a while considered pro
fessional football as a ca
reer. He made the little All-
American football squad in
1956 and 1958 while playing
all conference center at Lu
ther College.
Hoy’s program at Wesleyan
will include compositions by
lladyn, Beethoven, Chopin,
Brahms, and Hindemith.

To Give Recital On March 12
A beautiful fountain will de
corate the front of the cam
pus as a gift from Mr. FranI-:
E. Browtn, according to an
announcement made by Pre
sident Thomas A. Collins.
The plans have been ap
proved, mechanical equip
ment ordered, and construc
tion will begin as soon as
good weather makes it prac
tical.
This ornament on the cam
pus represents a continuing
interest on the part of Wes
leyan’s close friend and bene
factor. Last year the College
Entrance and Serpentine Wall
were dedicated at the Foun
ders’ Day Convocation, the
other major gift from Mr.
Brown, a native of Edge
combe County.
The fountain will be 40 feet
in diameter witli a brick and
marble curb surrounding the
basin. A six-foot brick wall
will surround the fountain
which should become a favor
ite meeting place on campus.

Library Given
Book Grants
The Carolina Wesleyan Col
lege Library has recetntly
been the recipient of more
than $5,500 for ^the purchase
of new books for this grow'-
ing library collection, accord
ing to an announcement from
Librarian Walter Gray.
An anonymous friend gave
a check for $£’,000, and among
other gifts Miss Vivian Bras
well gave the sum of $500 for
new book acquisitions. This
sum of $5,500 was apportioned
by the library committee of

a column of water will rise
40 feet into the air, and from
the side, eight columns of
water will rise toward the
center column. Each of these
will be lighted so that the
color discs may be changed
seasonally, or according to
the decorating theme of a
particular event in the col
lege life.
The fountain will be located
just within the inner circle
of the campus, at the end of
the divided entry way, and
adjacent to Tyler Drive. As
guests pasis the campus, or
enter from Highway 301, the
fountain will be immediately
ahead of them and in front
of the Braswell Administra
tion Building.
The fountain was designed
by Luther Lashmit, of Win-
ston-Salem, North Carolina,
and was suggested by a foun
tain at Santa Anita in Ar
cadia, California. This will
complete the approach to the
campus according to an ear
lier design for beautification
of the new campus.
Frank E. Brown, retired
president of the Manchester
Paper Products Company of
Richmond, Va., has demon
strated his continuing inter
est in the growth and de
velopment of the college from
its inception. His contribu
tions to the building program
and the academic program
of the college exceed any
other gift he has given. He
has proven himself to be a
friend of the students on the
occasion of several visits to
the campus.
Plans are under study to
dedicate this new facility dur
ing Senior Week as the pio
neer Senior Class plans for
graduation, Sunday, May 31,
1964.
