GAYLE FELTON MIKE PRATT Reeves Is Appointed New Executive Editor MRS. VIVIAN MITCHELL David Reeves has been ap pointed Executive Editor of the Wesleyan Decree for the academic year 1964-65. Busi ness Manager for the same period wUl be Bruce Sharer. Both of these positions carry with them a $200 scholarship each. David, a rising junior, has been with the staff for two DAVID REEVES yeans, during both of which he was sports editor. Bruce hais served as advertising manager for the Decree this year. Reorganization of the staff into a more unified body has also been established for next year and the foUowLng years. The editorial istaff will be composed of Ray O’Kelly, Managing Editor; Ronnie Ar rington, Assistant Managing Editor, Marilyn Spencer, Lay out Editor. Other members of the staff include Libby Wallace aind Dodie Waters. Libby will handle a column whUe Dodie does the same and edits the feature page. The business staff, under Bruce Sharer, will consist of Jerry Stockdale, Circulation and Subscription Manager; and Ray Robinson, Assistant Circulation Manager on cam pus. Other changes planned for next year include enlarging the size of the paper and keeping intercollegiate cir culation high. Womble^ Upchurch Given Scholarships Two local North Carolina Wetsleyan College day stu dents have received Bcholar- ships for graduate work in chemistry at Clemson Col lege, Clemson, S. C., next fall. Each grant is valued at $2,400 for the first year. Louis Womble has received a NASA Fellowship in the Ph.D. Program for Chemical Physics, renewable the first year at $2,600 and the isec- ond at $2,800. Billy Upchurch, the other student, has received a teach ing assistantship in the Doc toral Program in analytical chemistry. Both are candi dates for graduation in Wes- leyan’s first graduation clasS' on May 31. Womble, the son of L. R. Womble and the late Mrs. Womble, 1102 S. Franklin Street, was a Wesleyan Award Winner from Rocky Mount Senior High School and enter ed with Wesleyan’s first class in 1960. He has been a mem ber of the freshman baseball team, the tennis teams. Com munity Council, Delta Club, and Student Life Association as well as serving one year as president of the Day Stu dent’s Council and three years as college photographer. He has also made the Dean’s List. Upchurch is the son of Mr. and Mrs. O. G. Upchurch, RFD 1, Spring Hope, N. C. He and his wife, Wilhelmina, an imsurance executive’s sec retary, live on Raleigh Road Extension. A graduate of Rocky Mount Senior High School, he also became a member of Wesleyan’s first class. He served as junior class president and program chairman of Delta Science Club. He has made the Dean’s List and during the past two years has received the Lions Club Award. JOAN LAMBERTH Campus Radio Program Now On The Air Tlie Senate of North Caro lina Wesleyan College has formed a Student News Com mittee. The committee will join forces with radio WEED to broadcast a college news program every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:25 p. m. New® for the program is to come from all areas of col lege life. It will include such news items as club meetings and Individual announcements from students and faculty. The program is for the bet terment of the college. The faculty, administration and students are urged to par ticipate. Organizations wish ing to isubmit announcements are asked to leave them in a news: box which will be placed at the switchboard. Bill Gruver, president of the Freshman class, was ap pointed by the Senate to form the committee. Ronnie Ar rington is chairman and all students interested in work ing on the committee are asked to meet with him as soon as it is convenient. Present plans are for tlie committee to form its own organization and perhaps ex tend its services to other radio stations. Next year, the organizations will extend the time of broadcast from five minutes to perhaps one hour. If such is possible, the com mittee will strive to have in terviews with various faculty members and guests of the college. Next year there will Academic Achievement Trophy Is Won By Mrs. Gayle Felton North Carolina Wesleyan College climaxed today witli the presentation of Honors Awards at its third annual Honors Awards Convocation held in the assembly area of the Student Union building. Dr. Jack Teagarden, Asso ciate Professor of English at the College, presented the convocation addresis on the topic, “Uses of Professors.” Dean Jack W. Moore intro duced the speaker to trustees and students. This annual Convocation re cognizes outstanding student achievement in the major areas of student participation. The top trophy for academic achievement went to Mrs. Gayle Felton, a senior history major from Pinetops, N. C. This is the third year Mrs. Felton has won this award for the highest grade-point average having accumulated a 4.0 average during her seven semesters in attend ance at the College. Michael Joseph Pratt, a rising junior, was awarded the Outstanding Athlete of tlie Year Award. Mike has once this year been cited for out standing athletic ability at the close of basketball season. Essay Awards The John Paul Jones His tory Award, given by Colonial Dames of America, Nash County Chaper, was awarded to Mrs. Vivian Mitchell. Mrs. Mitchell, a senior, is a his tory major. Julia Barrett, a junior from Rocky Mount, was awarded the President’s Cita tion for Freshman Composi tion. Though a junior, Julia completed her freshman Eng lish requirements this year, thus making her eligible for this award. Leadership, Service Awards For the second year in a row, Sylvia Joan Lamberth was awarded the Outstanding Leadership and Service Award for women. Joan has served as secretary of the Student Government Association and was just recently crowned May Queen at the annual Spring Formal. The Leadership and Service Award for men wasi presented to Robert Otis Stephens, a rising senior. Known to all on campus as “Doc,” Robert has served this semester as Student Government presi dent and will serve in this same position next year under the new Constitution. Another award was added this year by the Psychology Club. This award was pre sented for leadership and ser vice particularly in the Psy chology club. Dr. H. E. Seidel, Jr., presented the award to Randy King. After the presentation of these awards, President Thomas A. Collins presented the Chapter to the newly formed Wesleyan Players, the Charter to the newly Dr. David Batcheller, pro- fesisor of speech and theatre at the College. Mr. L. W. Hill, chairman of the Board of Trustees, presented 119 new members of the Honorary Alumni witli certificates. S. Department of Health, Education and Wel fare hais awarded a $3,400 a year fellowship to a North Carolina Wesleyan chemistry student for work in en vironmental chemistry at tlie School of Public Health at the University of North Caro lina. R. William Creekmore, the recipient, enrolled in the first class at Wesleyan four years ago as a day student from Rocky Mount. He is a candi date for graduation here on May 31.
