FRIDAY OCTOBER 30, 1964 TWg PECBEE Page 7 Wesleyan Splits First Two Soccer Games On October 13, with recently elected co-captains, the Battling Bishops soccer team opened its first season with a win of 2 to 1. This game was played in Laurinburg, N. C., against St. Andrews College. Our team did not appear ag gressive enough in the first half and the score was 1 to 0 in favor of St. Andrews. After a half- time pep talk by Coach Music, the boys came back to tie the score in the 3rd quarter. There was no stopping the Bishops then. Our final goal came in the quarter. These two goals were made by Wade Hannum and Bryan Richardson. Richardson’s point was made on a penalty kick. Then on October 17th Wes leyan traveled to Buies creek for their first night game, which was with the Campbell Camels. The final score of 4 to 0, Campbell’s favor, does not tell the whole story, however. Our team played a more defensive game, and Campbell’s goals were made due to our inexperience rather than our inability. The team was pleased to see the large number of Wesleyan spectators that traveled the long distance to see them play. Even though we lost, the game was a thriller from the word “go”. The outcome was an unusual one for a soccer game, with a 0-0 tie even after two five-min ute overtime periods. The Bi shops were unable to score even though the majority of the game was played on Pembroke’s end of the field and many fine at tempts to score were made. The Bishops’ defense was able to keep Pembroke from all but one ser ious attempts to score. Even though some of the play ers seemed dissatisfied with the tie, Coach Music and the student body feel that they put out a fine effort and all that attended the game seemed to thoroughly en joy it. We have another home game Sat urday the 31st against U. N. C.’s freshmen. All are urged to come out and see our fine team play and cheer them on to another victory.
