Booters Finish 5-5
Drop Finale' To
Pembroke 3-1
A four game winning streak
and a hoped-for 6-4 final season
record for the Wesleyan soccer
team was foiled Saturday, Nov
ember 6 by the Pembroke Bra
ves, 3-1.
Mike Pratt scored the first
goal of the game with 8 minutes
gone in the first quarter, and
the smell of victory was in
the air, but such was not to be.
Pembroke tied the game 1 all
early in the. third quarter, when
Bishop goalie John Baker was un
able to control an attempted
score, and the loose ball was
batted in. The spirit and poise
of the Wesleyan team which had
characterized play in the first
half seemed to falter at this
point.
Two Brave scores in the final
period finished the scoring, al
though Wesleyan made several
valiant efforts late in the game.
Following a four game losing
streak early in the season, the
Bishop booters gained compos
ure and drive, and proceeded to
smack four successive op
ponents.
A 4-1 victory over Wilming
ton, which broke the losing string,
was followed by wins over Camp
bell College, St. Andrews, and
Wilmington once again.
Campbell bowed to the Bishops
for the second time this season
by the score of 3-2 on October
27 at the Baptist institution. A,
Wesleyan lead of 2-0 set by Red
Gatehouse and Stiles Livengood
was cut short by the Camels
in the fourth quarter.
Wesleyan took the ball follow-
ing the tieing score and Buzz
Barker booted the winning goal
just seconds after the lead had
been lost. The rest of the game
was played mainly on Campbell’s
end of the field.
The vision of an earlier 11-1
loss at the hands of St. Andrews
confronted the Bishops October
29 when the Knights scored early
in the first quarter.
The remembrance of the pre
vious beating seemed to fire up
the NCW squad, and Red Gate
house fired in a goal mid-way
the same period. Tom Farmer
put Wesleyan in the lead in the
second quarter with a hook shot
from his left-wing position.
Stiles Livengood wrapped up
the victory with a boot late in
the third period, for the final
3-1 margin.
Wilmington fell victim to the
Bishops in the next-to-last game
of the season 2-1.
Barker scored with an assist
by Farmer in the first quarter,
and newcomer Ralph Thomas
kicked in a goal midway the
second stanza.
Play in the second half ranged
up and down the field, with Wes
leyan failing to capitalize on sev
eral scoring opportunities, until
Wilmington picked up their lone
goal in the fourth period.

Long hours of practice and . . .
Harriers Lose
Wesleyan’s harriers finished
last in the final regular season
meet for the 1965 long distance
runners. The Bishops trailed
Lynchburg and Methodist.
The meet, held at Lynchburg,
presented the Bishops with their
first experience this year in ad
vanced hill climbing. Coach Don
Scalf commented that “our boys
were at a definite disadvantage”
due to the unfamiliarity with
running in hilly territory.
NCW’s Larry Vaughn finished
in the number nine position with
a time of 27:05. First-place fin
isher Mike Lannon of Lynchburg
covered the course in 20;17.
The remainder of the Wes
leyan squad finished pretty well
together. Herb Hall was 13th,
Steve Gordon 14th, Bill Dixon
16th, Fred Hurst 18th, and Nat
Railey 19th.
Coach Scalf and his runners
will travel to St. Andrews Nov
ember 13 for the Dixie Confer
ence Meet.
