ALEXANDER TO
ASSIST DEAN
Of particular interest to the
student body is the addition of
Mrs. Sara Cole Alexander as
Wesleyan’s first assistant dean
of students.
Mrs. Alexander, a familiar
sight in our school store, has
served at Wesleyan since Jan.
1966 as director of auxiliary
enterprises.
As a welcomed aide to Dean
Wilde, she will become an ad
visor and counselor to women
students. She will be responsible
for coordinating the social and
recreational life of the campus,
working directly with student
committees to plan and super
vise college social functions.
Prior to her employment at
Wesleyan, Mrs. Alexander, a na
tive of Winston-Salem and a grad
uate of Duke University, was
active In various religious and
civic organizations in the Rocky
Mount area.
She and her husband, J. C,
Alexander, have two children:
John, Jr,, a pre-medical student
at Duke University, and Thomas,
a rising junior at Rocky Mount
Senior High.

Smith Retires
Sawyer Named Comptroller
Wesleyan’s first employee.
Comptroller W. Jasper Smith,
will soon become its first to
retire. President Thomas A.
Collins announced that Smith
plans to retire around Oct, 1,
Smith, who had the honor of
being the chairman of the first
Board of Trustees, relinquished
this post to become business
manager, later comptroller,
from which positions he guided
the construction and development
of the college up to the present.
However, Smith has agreed
to continue his services on a
part-time basis, assisting the
business office and handling
special assignments for the
president in the area of devel
opment and public relations.
Dr. Collins revealed Smith’s
plans to the Board of Trustees
at its Annual Meeting in May.
He said, “Mr. Smith has carved
a permanent place in the records
of the college. He was among
those who dared to dream of
a new college in Rocky Mount;
he worked diligently to bring
that dream to fruition. We sa
lute the accomplishments which
have crowned his long and active
service to The Methodist Church
and to North Carolina Wesleyan
College.”
Last year Smith received the
Methodist Layman of the Year
award at the N. C. Annual Con
ference. At Wesleyan’s Tenth
Anniversary Founders’ Day Con
vocation last Oct. 25, Dr. Col
lins presented him with a cer
tificate and a special gold pin
in recognition of his 10 years
of service, the first such award
made by the college.
Smith, 65, is a native of Bethel
and Pitt County, where he served
as town and county commis
sioner. He was a high school
principal in Pitt and Martin
counties from 1923 to 1928 and
following that prominent busi
nessman in the Bethel area be
fore becoming associated with
Wesleyan.
He attended Duke University
and Pell School of Law. He
is a member of the Board of
Trustees of Randolph - Macor
Academy, Front Royal, Va. He
is a Mason and has been a
Rotarian for 36 years.
Sniith is married to the for
mer Carolyn Pollock of Trenton.
They have recently moved back
to his ancestral farm site in
B ethel, now a thriving suburban
development.
Floyd Daniel Sawyer will be
come comptroller at N. C, Wes
leyan College here Sept 1,
Sawyer, 38, will succeed W.
Jasper Smith, who, having served
the college since its founding in
1956, recently announced plans
to retire.
Sawyer, employed in the Duke
University business office since
his graduation from there in
1959, is presently chief account
ant and office manager.
He sp6nt two years in the U.
S. Army, serving part of that
time with the Corps of Engineers
in Korea.
Sawyer is a charter member
and director of the Friendly City
Kiwanis Club of Durham. He
is also chairman of the Duke
University ReUgious Council
Fiscal Policy Committee and
treasurer of the Duke University
Faculty Club.
He is a native of Durham
and attended Hargrave Military
Academy and Elon College. Prior
to graduation from Duke he was
associated with Sawyer and
Moore Drug Co. and Wachovia
Bank & Trust Company in Dur
ham.
Sawyer is married to tne for
mer Marion Buttry of Durham.
They have two sons, Danny and
Timothy Douglas, aged 13 and
30 months, and a daughter,

PSYCH DEPT.
Dr. Arthur F. Jenness will
become professor of psychology
at N. C. Wesleyan College here
in September.
Educated at Northwestern Uni
versity (B. A. and M, A.), he
earned the Ph.D. degree from
S yracuse University. Beginning
as an instructor of psychology
and counselor of freshmen, he
became first chairman of the
Psychology Department at the
University of Nebraska where
he taught for 16 years. After
a tour of duty with the U. S.
Air Corps during World War
II, he went to Williams College
where he again became the first
chairman of the Psychology De
partment, teaching there for 20
years.
He has held numerous respon
sible positions with the Ameri
can Psychological Association,
including chairman of the
membership and program com
mittees. He is a Fellow of the
A. P. A., and the AAAS, He
holds membership in the AAUP,
the Psychononaic Society and
Sigma Xi,
Dr. Jenness has published
many articles in professional
journals,* and was associate edi
tor of “Prarie Schooner’' in
