Rush At Wesleyan
It’s gratifying to be an in
novator, but more gratifying
to have one’s innovations be
come traditions. Twenty years
from now the students at Wes
leyan will know next to nil
about Paul Robinett and Quin
ton White; yet, these men have
worked hard in devoting their
valuable time and efforts to
the establishment of Wesley-
an’s two social fraternities.
Alpha Delta Chi and Nu Gamma
Phi. Paul is president of Alpha
Delta Chi and Quinton has just
concluded his temure as presi
dent of Nu Gamma Phi,
Concerning Alpha Delta Chi,
one finds the following state
ment in the Bishops’ L.A.W;
“Alpha Delta Chi, established
in 1965 and chartered in 1967,
was organized for the purpose
of improving the Wesleyan
social life and bettering the col
lege community. The fraterni
ty offers social events and serv
ices to the school where
needed,” Among the present
members of this fraternity are
the S. G. A. president, the
chief justice of the supreme
court, the junior class presi
dent, the athletics commission
chairman, the head of the de
fense counsel, two ARC’S and
three Wesleyan Activists.
About Nu Gamma Phi, the
Bishops’ L. k' W. states the
following: “The members of
Ny Gamma Phi, Wesleyan’s
newest social fraternity, pur-
s ue academic excellence and the
b roadening of experience
through their Brotherhood in
the context of the Wesleyan
community, Nu Gamma Phi
sponsors service projects as
well as social functions,”
Among the present members
of this fraternity are thepresi-
dents of both men’s dorms, the
sophmore and senior class
presidents, the S. G. A, treas
urer, the chairman of the S. G. A.
elections committee, five Acti
vists, and several star atheletes
who have dressed in the var
sity locker room and have had
their pictures in the paper.
Presidents Robinett and
White both agree that the forma
tion of fraternities on campus
has been worthwhile. The bond
of brotherhood felt by fellow
fraternity members has gen
erated compatibility and thi^
compatibility has been applied
effectively by having the fra
ternities room on third floor
South Hall. The general riot
ousness that used to prevail
there is now nearly nonexis
tent. Both fraternities have
redecorated spare rooms, mak
ing them into nice, comfortable
lounges. The weekly fraternity
meetings bring the members
together for discussions, some
thing which probably would not
m
occur Tiad the fraternities not
been formed. The fraternities,
however, don’t want to be label
ed snob societies, and they
shouldn’t be. White points out
the the constitution of Nu
Gamma Phi states that
members need only be “males
with good moral character, re
gardless of race, color, or
creed.” Robinett feels that
the fraternities create and pro
mote a congenial atmosphere
for everyone, not just fraterni
ty members. He says definite-
that “they serve to
ly
c ampus morale and
boast
spirit.”
This semester the members
of each fraternity will take
five to eight weeks to rush
prospective new members, of
fering them invitations to par
ties and in general making them
aware of each fraternity’s
respective benefits. Parties
. and initiation parties have al
ready been planned. Aq, open
-house was held recently. All
of the planned activity will cul
minate in an initiation cere
mony which each fraternity has
to delineate the responsibilities
and obligations of each new
member. Once initiated a mem
ber of Nu Gamma Phi is assess
ed $2.50 per month for his dues.
Nu Gamma Phi Pres.
Mike Scjiaden
Alpna Delta Chi pays $25 per
semester and $10 for the
summer in dues. It is with
this money that the fraternities
sponsor parties and purchase
their work materials used in
promoting school spirit and im
proving the social life of the
community.
Any one interested In join
ing one of these fine fraterni
ties is welcome to do so and
should make an effort to get
in touch with them. We can
use your help and enthusiasm.
