Trustees approve campus chapel
On February 25, North
Carolina Wesleyan’s Board of
Trustees approved plans for a
college chapel. Construction
will begin soon after
necessary funding is provided
through gifts from private
individuals or foundations.
The estimated cost of the
structure, designed by Dove-
Knight and Associates of
Rocky Mount, is $165,000.
Dr. S. Bruce Petteway,
college President, cites that
the chapel will be the first new
structure on the Wesleyan
campus since the library,
which was built in 1966.
“Garber Chapel, which
was incorporated in a large
classroom of the Pearsall
Classroom Building, has
served us well,” Petteway
said. “The time has come,
however, for the college to
symbolize its commitment to
Christian education and its
permanence in the
community.”
The proposed chapel will
be located on the front campus
just east of the Pearsall
Classroom Building. It has
been designed in the Georgian
colonial style, as have all
other structures on
Wesleyan’s campus.
The main area of the
chapel will be suitable for
educational as well as
religious functions, as there
will be no fixed furnishings in
the area.
After completion, the
building will measure 67 by 40
feet, with a total area of 2,578
square feet. It will have a
seating capacity of 150.
Aside from the main area
of the struclure, the chapel
will also contain an office for
the campus minister, a
storage area and rest room
facilities.
The east side of the main
area will be glass-walled,
opening onto an outdoor court
surrounded by a pierced brick
wall.
The chapel is. the first of a
two-phased plan. The second
step calls for the construction
of a sanctuary adjacent to the
chapel. The sanctuary will
seat 400.
Detailed plans for the
sanctuary have not yet been
developed, but preliminary
drawings show a structure
similar to the chapel in the
Georgian architectural style,
but much larger. The
sanctuary, as well as the
chapel, will be nestled in the
pine trees that populate the
Wesleyan campus.
The proposed sanctuary
will seat a congregation of 350,
and will have seating for
another 50 people in the
chancel area. At the rear of
the structure, behind the
altar, there will be an
educational area for
classroom use.
The sanctuary will be
joined to the chapel by a
cloister. A parking area will
eventually be constructed
behind the sanctuary with
access to the main campus
drive.
No plans for the sanctuary
have been approved, nor has
any timetable for construction
been made final.
Aside from being the first
construction on the Wesleyan
campus in 15 years, the
proposed chapel marks the
first step toward the
completion of construction in
the college’s Third Decade
Plan.
In announcing the plan.
Judge Carlton said,
“Financial support for the
Third Decade Plan must be
very substantial. With modest
allowances for inflation-fueled
increases in costs. North
Carolina Wesleyan College
will need $12 million to
support its annual operations
funds and $14 million for
endowment, construction, and
Architectural Drawing of Proposed Chapel.
GRADUATING SENIORS ELIGIBLE
TO VOTE IN ALUMNI ELECTION
Graduating Seniors are
invited to vote in the North
Carolina Wesleyan College
academic programs in the
1980-1990 decade.”
Under the Third Decade
Plan, $6 million is needed for
construction and renovation.
Alumni Association election
currently underway. This
year’s election will select a
new slate of officers and eight
new members for the Board of
Directors.
Ballots will be available in
Room 120 of Braswell
Administration Building daily
through April 24.
