The bleacher-creatures were back and the gym had its largest crowd of the season. Entering the game, CNC had a 9-3 conference record, one-half a game better than Wesleyan’s 8-3 mark. After 40 minutes of play, the battling Bishops re gained first place as they de feated the Captains of Chris topher Newport. ITie reason it was such a close game according to Wesleyan head coach Jeff Reynolds, was, “The offensive board game,” CNC’s 16 offensive rebounds accounted for 19 points. “Our ability to keep CNC off the of fensive boards was disapppint- ing,” Reynolds said. “Being out- rebounded two games in a row is a great concern of mine.” (CNC out-rebounded Wesleyan 38 to 21.) ITie offensive play of the Bi shops has improved. The bright est star was senior Daniel Wright, who scored 23 points and pulled down seven re bounds to lead the Bishops. Jack Martine added 17 points and four assists while dependa ble Lloyd Watts contributed eight assists. CNC was led by Carl Hayes’ 14 pointsand his 12rebounds, followed by Broderick Roye’s 12 points, and Buck Moore’s ten points. N.C. Wesleyan 81 Mary Washington 69 N.C. Wesleyan defeated non conference opponent Mary Wa shington 81-69 last Saturday night. The Bishops’ defense again played a key role in the victory allowing Mary Wa shington to shoot only 39 per cent from the field for the game. Chris Bratcher was the Bi shops leading scorer with 24 points. Also in double figures were Jack Martine who had 17 Lloyd Watts who had 12. ITie win improves Wesleyan’s record to 15-5 overall. N.C. Wesleyan 72 UNC-Greensboro 59 Led by Jack Martine, who had 22 points, N.C. Wesleyan defeated UNC-Greensboro 72- 69. The Bishops shot 73 percent in the second half while limiting UNC-G to only 39 percent. Da niel Wright scored 16 points while Lloyd Watts had 14 and freshman Chris Bratcher had 12. 1 Wesleyan maintained it’s first place position in the DIAC conference with a 6-2 record. N.C. Wesleyan.... .67 Greensboro College 55 N.C. Wesleyan’s men’s bas ketball team traveled to Greensboro College and re turned with a 67-55 win. Daniel, Wright was the leading scorer for the Bishops with 17 points. John Brackett was also in dou ble figures wdth 13. The win is Wesleyans sixth in a row and keeps them in first place in the DIAC conference. The Bishops stand at 8-2 in the conference and 16-5 overall. Brooks Leads Lady Bishops Against St. Andrews, 79-69 By CHRIS OSTLING Robin Brooks’ 21 points — 12 rebound performance helped the Lady Bishops basketball team to a 79-69 victory over St. Andrews last Thursday. The win gave the I^dy Bishops a 7-4 conference mark and a 11-7 mark overall. According to Coach Laura Ferrell, the goal of the Lady Bi shops going into the game was to stop St. Andrews Ann Tho mas from scoring. This was a major key to the win, as Thomas only scored six points during the game. St. Andrews scored first in the game, but only kept their lead for a few minutes as Cynthia Jones and Robin Brooks helped the Lady Bishops catch up to and pull ahead of St. Andrews for a 43-41 lead at the half. According to Ferrell, the Bi shops played better defensively in the second half, relying on Jackie Butler’s leadership and Penny Brown’s outstanding defensive play. I’m a little tougher in what I demand from them,” said Berry. “We’re going to run more specials,” said Berry. “We’re back on the pizza busi ness now,” said Berry. Don Francis, former Marriot food service specialist, will be teaching food preparation courses. “Don Francis will evolve into a full-time position, teaching all of our food classes,” said Berry. “Training will be done with each new employee.” Berry added, “We are striving to improve, and we will when student managers improve their role.” drews again got within three points of the Wesleyan lead. With three more games until the DIAC Tournament, Coach Ferrell hopes that the team can be ranked fourth going into the tournament so that “we can host the quarter-finals.” Ferrell believes that if they can host the quarter-finals the lady Bishops will have a good chance in the tournament. N.C Wesleyan 75 Greensboro 55 N.C. Wesleyan’s lady Bishops defeated Greensboro College 75- 55 and improved their confer ence record to 6-3. Robin Brooks shot 82 percent from the floor to lead the Bishops with 32 points. Other Bishops in double figures were Cynthia Jones with 16 and Penny Brown with 13. The win puts the lady Bi shops at 10-7 overall. N.C. Wesleyan 75 Christopher Newport ... 68 Robin Brooks scored 24 points as N.C. Wesleyan defeated Christopher Newport 75-68 in overtime. The game was tied 63 all at the end of regulation but the lady Bishops out-scored Christopher Newport 12 to 5 in the overtime period. Wesleyan fell behind early in the second half but Pam Miller came off the bench to score 15 points and grabbled 14 re bounds to spark the comeback. Everyone who played for the Bishops scored. Cynthia Jones had 12 points and Bev Arm strong 10. Wesleyan moved into third place with the victory and now stand 8-3 in the conference and 12-7 overall. Valentine Helps House Approve College Aid Bill A student financial aid bill has passed the House with the support of Rep. Tim Valentine, who said the measure contains community colleges and four- year institutions of higher edu cation. “Most of the aid would go to students as loans to be repaid after graduation,” Valentine said. “The bill also contains cost-cutting measures in admin istration and the repayment of loans.” New proposals in the bill would let non-traditional stu dents qualify more easily for federal aid. “Such students in clude parents who deferred col lege to raise children, workers switching careers, and others entering college past the usual age,” Valentine said. The change would affect community colleges as well as four-year schools, according to the Sub committee on Postsecondary Education.
