PAGE 2 — THE DECREE - FRIDAY, MARCH 14, 1986 Opinions and Editorials Good Experience College Press Service By JOHN PRIDGEN Working on the staff of The Decree has taught this student that the campus newspaper provides one with an educa tional experience, in addition to informing the college com-' munity of important events and developments. As a commuter student, I do not spend much time on cam pus. Opportunities to have more than passing acquain tance with teachers and other students used to be practically nonexistent. Serving as a member of The Decree staff; has provided me with chances to communicate with fellow students, faculty members, chief administrators of NCWC, and prominent members of the surrounding community. The Decree ena bles one to learn firsthand much about Wesleyan and the people who guide it. Members of the college community express their thoughts about vital issues in The Decree. Writing and read-' ing stories about events and' developments at Wesleyan during the semester has taught me much about the var ied effects decisions and changes have on different people. The simplest altera tion in finances, academic re quirements, or any other con dition or policy produces good and bad effects for everyone. Some express their opinion in The Decree, which shows how “simple” changes and deci sions develop into complex issues. In addition to providing so cial opportunities and valua ble information about the views of others, working for the college newspaper teaches one the possible effects his writing can have on other peo ple. Writing an article which will be read and evaluated by hundreds of people deeply im presses upon the mind the im portance of the words. Reac tions can range from whole hearted agreement to violent dissapproval, so one must write with care. The Decree is an important part of the North Carolina Wesleyan community, not on ly as a means of communica tion, but also as a means of learning more about other members of the community, their opinions, and the influ ence that my writing can have on others. The Book On Resume Preparation” by C. Edward Good, 178 pp., Charlottesville, Word Store, $8.95 (bulk: $5.85). If you haven’t read this book, chances are your resume will look like Herb. Do you know what employ ers look for in resumes? Blue Jeans tells you. Do you know how to strut your stuff in a re sume? Blue Jeans tells you. Whataboutcontent, writing style, formatting? Once again. Blue Jeans tells you. Blue Jeans takes the reader through every needed step in developing a winning resume. Unlike other books on resumes Faculty Drops Theater Major (Continued from Page 1) theater major was made be cause of our “need to dedicate our energy and resources to those areas which will best serve the students.” Ackerman said the curricu lum committee intprviewed the involved departments to decide which of the three ma jors should be desolved. The results were passed on to the faculty. However, Professor Ackerman stated that he was the one who “dealt the blow to theater.” According to Ackerman, a one person faculty, which the theater department currently has, would be “cheating the students.” “Students graduat ing from our program must compete with students coming from other programs.” Ackerman went on to say that though there will not be a theater major, there will be a “theater program.” To repres ent the department looking ahead, Fritz, stated that NCWC hopes to build a per forming arts center in the fu ture. “With improved facilities theater may be reuitilized.” which offer dry, boring, wimpy advice, Blue Jeans cuts through the garbage, answers your questions, and makes you laugh. The author gets behind you and shoves you into action — write a winning resume! The big flaw in this book is the title and cover. When it first arrived, my first reaction was, “Oh, NO, not another book on resume writing.” Then I looked at the cover and wondered if we were talking about dungarees or designers. Either way, I wasn’t interest ed. Then I gave in and read it. Mr. Good should change his name, scrap the cover, and call his book The GREAT Resume Writing Book. This book is a must for every student. fiZae Jeans is for sale in the Co-op/Career Planning Office. Price is $5.85 for students.
