Wesleyan Teams Lose Tourney Finals
By JOHN HARTIGAN
The North Carolina Wes
leyan men’s and women’s
basketball teams were the vic
tims of similar fates in the D.I.-
A.C. tournament which took
place February 11 through
February 22. Both teams
started the tournament off in a
good manner with first round
victories. Both teams won
their second round games,
playing very good basketball.
Both teams also had problems
in the tournamentfinals that
they could not overcome, as
both teams were defeated in
the championship game.
The women opened the
tournament with a lopsided
win against Greensboro Col
lege, 71-49. The men’s team
also defeated Greensboro Col
lege in their first round game.

The second round matched
the women against 18th-
ranked Virginia Wesleyan.
They upset the Lady Marlins

pionship game to face the
Lady Captains of Christopher

ranked UNC-G.

With seven returning play
ers from last year’s squad,
rookie head coach Diane
Scherzer is extremely optimis
tic about the upcoming season.
“I think we can take first or
second place,” stated
Scherzer.

kin at third. Marge Piasta at
pitcher-outfield, Debbie
Bounds at pitcher-outfield,
and catcher Kathy Deyo.
Coach Scherzer feels that
the pitching and defense are
looking as well as expected at
this point, while the hitting is
not.
“We really started out (hit
ting) slowly, but we’ve picked
it up considerably as of late,”
Scherzer said.
Coach Scherzer thinks the
conference title will basically
be a three team race. “Metho
dist has a good team, as does
UNC-G,” said Scherzer. How
ever, Scherzer feels “we have a
good shot.”
The conference matchups
will not be such a new thing for
Scherzer. She spent two years
as an assistant coach at UNC-
G before coming to Wesleyan.

game that saw the Bishops
shoot from the floor. This
placed the Bishops in the
championship game, also fac
ing Christopher Newport.
Poor foul shooting proved to be
the downfall of the women as
they - lost 66-62 in the final
game.
The men’s team fell to Chris
topher Newport 57-45, as they
shotonly 33percentfrom the
floor. The Bishops began the
game with a seven minute
drought as they missed their
firsteightfield goal attempts
of the game. This proved to be
fatal, as the Bishops could
never catch up with Captains.
The women, who finished
the season with a 16-12 record,
did not receive an at-large bid
to the NCAA tournament. The
men ended their season sim-
ilary, as they did not get a bid
despite a 21-7 record.
Coach Says Bishops
Still Title Contender
By CHRIS OSTLING
As the 1986 NCWC baseball
season unfolds. Head Coach
Mike Fox feels that “We have
as good of a shot as anybody”
for winning the conference ti
tle. The Bishops have won the
Dixie Conference title for the
previous five years.
Fox says that the team will
have to work harder this year
because of the loss of key play
ers such as Carl Payne, Steve
Durell, and Charlie Simpson.
As a result of this loss, Fox
states that “we’re not as
strong this year.”
Coach Fox looks to the re
turning players to help the
team along this year. Senior,
Gene Sanguinetti, who led the
Bishops in hitting last year, is
expected to be a key player this
year, along with senior first
basemar, Jim Provenzano. In
addition, junior, Paul Prisco
and senior, Charlie Flowers
will be returning.
Despite losing seven
pitchers from last year, NCWC
hopes to have a strong staff.
Senior Mike Siciliano, who
had a 9-1 record last year, will
be a starting pitcher, as will
junior Frabkie Moore. The on
ly question mark in the pitch
ing game this year is the expe
rience of the four freshmen
pitchers.
Offensively, Coach Fox says
thathe will be depending on
“team speed” rather than the
efforts of just a few people. He
is also confident that the team
will score more runs and steal
more bases this year.
Fox says that he thinks that
Salisbury State, Hampden-
Sydney, North Adams State,
and Frostburg State will be
tough Division 1 competitors.
In the Dixie Conference UNC-
Charlotte, Virginia Wesleyan,
and Methodist will also pose a
threat to the Bishops. Fox says
that Wesleyan’s Division III
record is “crucial” to whether
or not they get a bid for the
national tournament.
