Cafeteria surveys students

A week or so ago, when you
went to the cafeteria to eat, you were
probably handed a card and asked to
fill it out. You noticed that it was a
survey on how well Saga is per
forming in the areas of food, quality,
service, and atmosphere. You put
your ideas on the survey, rated the
food, and made suggestions for the
improvement of our cafeteria.

The proposed name change of
N.C. Wesleyan's yearbook was re
cently abandoned .This, however, was
not the first attempt on the part of a
yearbook staff to change the name of
X\\e,Dissenter, and according to sourc
es on the yearbook staff it will not
be the last.
"They didn't expect so many
people to be against the change," said
an unidentified yearbook staff mem
ber. "I was never for the name
teria manager, the survey is con
ducted twice a yearj once in the fall
and once in the spring. The results
are sent to the district manager of
Saga. The survey is also studied
closely here in our cafeteria.
The actual numbers were average,
with higher scores going to the
friendliness and appearance of the
service personnel and lower scores to
the areas of food quality, taste, and
appearance. Mrs. Banford said that
some survey card had to be thrown

change anyway, it's tradition. Be
cause we have so few traditions here
at Wesleyan, I feel that we should
keep those few that we have alive."
In a recent memo sent to Wes
leyan faculty by the yearbook staff,
the desire for a name change was
expressed. The name Dissenter was
said to have "negative overtones," and
the suggestion was made to change
the name to something more "up
beat."

out due to the legitimacy of the
answers. Banford also stated that,
. "When cooking for a large variety of
people, there is bound to be dissent
in what they like."
In the past students' suggestions
have netted the cafeteria a new
toaster and a hot chocolate machine.
Recently, ideas have gotten the cafe
teria a daily soup and different meats
in the deli line.
Although the daily menus are
regulated by the main office of Saga,
Mrs. Banford is still able to make
small decisions on food choice.
There are also special foods on holi
days and special occasions.
Many students think that the
$1600 a year that they pay for board
all goes toward the purchase of food.
The majority of the money goes to
buy food, but the rest of the money
goes toward the cost of maintaining
the cafeteria.
Mrs. Banford would like to see
the cafeteria remodeled to better
serve the needs of the students. If
Saga is able to get a five year con
tract with the Wesleyan cafeteria,
they would be willing to put money
into its renovation.
Recently, Dr. Marshall A.
Brooks, Chairman, Department of
Education at Wesleyan, was named
the Acting Dean of Academic Affairs
for the 1986-1987 school year.
Dr. Brooks is happy about being
appointed as Acting Dean. He feels
that this is an opportunity to learn
more about administration and to see
if he would like to go into admin
istration full time. Dr. Brooks said,
"This is a critical year for the college
and we have an opportunity to move
the college forward. This is what 1
plan to do."
During his year as Acting Dean,
Dr. Brooks hopes to accomplish
several things. He hopes to improve
services to the faculty in order to
retain more faculty members. He
also wants to work on serving the
students better. But first he feels we
must recognize the type of school
we are.
"We are more than just the on
campus, Rocky Mount day pro
gram," said Dr. Brooks. "We have
more off campus and extension stu
dents all over regional North Caro
lina than on campus students, and
we must realize this." Dr. Brooks'
overall goal is to make the school
stronger, and he feels this is the way
to do it.
Dr. Brooks was chosen as Acting
Dean of Academic Affairs by Acting
President, Dr. Stephen E. Fritz.
Although Dr. Fritz made the final
decision, he consulted with several
of his colleagues including Dr
Kenneth V. Finney, chairman of the
Faculty Council, before selecting
Dr. Brooks. Both yf these men are
very sure that Dr, Brooks is defi
nitely the right man for the job.
Acting President Fritz considered
the decision to choose an Acting
Dean carefully, and he found that Dr
Brooks was the outstanding choice.
He is trusted by his colleagues and
fully committed to his new position.
Dr. Fritz said, "The Dean's office
needs someone with a good sense of
academics and administration, some
one to meet the needs of both faculty
and students, and someone who un
derstands academic programs and
how they function. Dr. Brooks de
monstrates these qualities." Dr. Fritz
seems very pleased with Dr. Brooks'
performance in his new position
thus far and is confident of his con
tinued success.
Dr. Kenneth Finney agrees with
Dr. Fritz' choice for Acting Dean.
He has worked with Dr Brooks for
seven years and he feels that Dr.
Brooks will succeed in his new
position.
Dr. Finney said, "One of the
dangers of an Acting Dean is they
sort of hold down the fort until the
calvary gets there. Here, both the
Acting Dean and President are going
ahead with things." Dr. Finney also
said that Dr Brooks gets along well
with everyone and is represented by
both the faculty and administration.
College adds
writing essay

The Writing Proficiency Com
mittee, directed by Dr. Emily Mere
dith, has initiated a new graduation
requirement for all degree-seeking
students which includes all freshmen
and transfer students who entered
Wesleyan in the fall of 1986. This
requirement is the Writing Profi
ciency Essay, and should be taken as
soon as possible after completing
English 112.
According to Dr. Meredith, the
purpose of the essay is "to see how
clearly people can communicate
through writing." Dr. Meredith said,
"The emphasis will not be placed on
grammar, but how a person responds
to what he has read."
The first exam will be given on
Nov. 12, however, there will be
more testing dates in February,
April, and during the summer.
The exam will be evaluated by
the seven members of the Com
mittee, who were chosen by the
Dean and Dr. Meredith herself. The
seven members are, Dr Rick Wat
son, Dr. Sally Craven, Mrs. Frances
Harrison, Dr. Leverett Smith, Dr.
-Jake Owensby, Dr Kim Nordquest,
and Dr. Meredith.
